Anderson Cooper interviewed his mom Gloria Vanderbilt for his new talk show. Vanderbilt opened up about her son Carter's 1988 suicide.

The legendary fashion designer, 87, recalls the moment her then-23-year-old son Carter was hanging off the ledge of the family's 14th floor penthouse apartment in New York. She tells Anderson:

"When he went … I thought he was going to come back, but he didn't. He let go, and there was a moment when I thought I was going to jump over after him. I thought of you and it stopped me from [jumping]."

Vanderbilt, who wrote the book A Mother's Story back in 1997 about the tragedy, added, "You never get over it, but you learn to live with it."
