John Galliano Found Guilty Of Racist Comments

Designer John Galliano has been convicted in Paris of hate crimes on Thursday after marking racist and anti-Semetic remarks.

He was fined 6,000 Euros (about $8,500.)

The designer was not in court to hear the ruling. His attorney called the decision "wise" and said Galliano, 50, is "relieved."

The fine is suspended on the conditional term that he not be found guilty of any crime in France for five years. He must also pay a small court fee to the French government.

The results stem from Galliano's Feb. 24 arrest, when he was accused of assaulting two people at a cafe. The second was an Oct. 8, 2010, incident at the same cafe, where he was accused of insulting a woman. She came forward after the Feb. 24 arrest.

Galliano was fired from Dior following the incidents. In February he left France to enter The Meadows rehab center in Arizona. He was released in April. On June 22, he took the stand in court and testified that he didn't remember the Feb. 24 incident because he was addicted to sleeping pills, Valium and alcohol.
