This story is getting weirder and weirder.

Morning Joe cohosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough were discussing President Trump's bizarre Twitter attack against them on their show this morning, when they let it slip that the POTUS and the White House allegedly threatened them with a National Enquirer article earlier this month.

They claim White House aides contacted them and suggested that if they apologize for their negative coverage of Trump, he could make a negative story that was set to run in the tabloid disappear. How you ask? The commander-in-chief is friends with David Pecker, the mag's publisher.

"We got a call that, 'Hey, the National Enquirer is going to run a negative story against you guys...' And they said, 'If you call the president up, and you apologize for your coverage, then he will pick up the phone and basically spike this story," Scarborough said. "The calls kept coming and kept coming, and they were like 'Call. You need to call. Please call. Come on, Joe. Just pick up the phone and call him,'" he added.

"Let me explain what they were threatening. They [The Enquirer] were calling my children. They were calling close friends. These calls persisted for quite some time, and then Joe had the conversations that he had with the White House where they said 'Oh, this could go away,'" Brzezinski clarified.

Not true, says both Trump and National Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard.

"We have no knowledge of any discussions between the White House and Joe and Mika about our story, and absolutely no involvement in those discussions," Howard said.

"Watched low rated @Morning_Joe for first time in long time. FAKE NEWS. He called me to stop a National Enquirer article. I said no! Bad show," Trump tweeted.

Could the President of the United States really be using gossip rags to blackmail reporters into being nice to him? This is insane!
