One year has passed since Alexa Ray Joel, daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, attempted suicide at her West Village apartment in New York.

Now speaking out on the incident, the 24-year-old tells the NY Post, "I have a flair for the dramatic."

The singer, who tried to kill herself by swallowing a handful of sleeping pills after reportedly breaking up with her boyfriend of five years, rock musician Jimmy Riot, says:

"I got caught up in my own head. It was a panic. I didn't want to die. I just didn't want to feel what I was feeling at that moment any more."

Joel, now living in NY's Nolita neighborhood, adds:

"My West Village apartment never felt like my home. It was lonely. I was out of a relationship, and I was struggling with it. It was too big for me. This feels like home."

As for how she's feeling now, she says, "I'm starting to grow a thicker skin and grow into myself, and you learn to accept your quirks and your appearance."

Sounds like she's on the right track!

After being hospitalized for a reported suicide attempt, Alexa Ray Joel has been released from St. Vincent's Medical Center in Manhattan and is currently resting at her father's house on Long Island.

Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley's daughter was rushed to the hospital after taking eight sleeping pills on Saturday, and it was her roommate who called 911 from their NYC apartment. A police source tells NYDN, "[Alexa's roommate] said [she] had taken pills and was feeling despondent. She said she wasn't feeling good about herself." Two law enforcement sources said the overdose was classified as a suicide attempt, though a source close to Alexa Ray said she "only consumed a homeopathic antihistamine called Traumeel."

While her mother came to visit her shortly after 4PM, Billy Joel stayed in touch with her over the phone. Billy Joel told Newsday "she is going to be fine," and a source added, "Billy didn't go so it didn't become a circus atmosphere. He was in constant phone contact."

Thankfully! But this is still such sad news.

Billy Joel's daughter was hospitalized yesterday after her roommate called 911. Reports say that Alexa ingested a large number of sleeping pills, causing police to believe this is a suicide attempt. As of now, the 23-year-old is in stable condition.

Another report suggests that Alexa might've been distraught over a boyfriend. Gosh, we hope it wasn't something so serious as to make the girl consider suicide!

Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley's 23-year-old daughter Alexa Ray Joel was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in NYC after a reported drug overdose.

A rep for the family tells People, "[Alexa] is stable and her doctors are assessing her needs," and several websites are claiming that paramedics came to Alexa’s NYC apartment at 12:19PM today after an unidentified female caller told the dispatcher that Alexa had “taken pills.” When EMTs arrived, they say Alexa was having difficulty breathing, and no other information has been released at this point in time.
