Angelina Jolie Sued For Copyright Infringement Over Upcoming Bosnian War Film
Posted on Mon Dec 5, 2011 12:45 PM PDT
Angelina Jolie is being sued by Croatian journalist James Braddock, who claims her upcoming film, In the Land of Blood and Honey violates the copyright on his book, The Soul Shattering.
Braddock is demanding statutory damages plus an injunction against the film's release, and while Jolie may not have knowingly plagiarized the work, according to the lawsuit, one of her producers may have had something to do with the similarities between the two stories.
Braddock claims that after publishing the book in 2007, he was approached by Jolie's producer Edin Sarkic, and the two met to discuss details about the book, "including plot and character development and the story's cultural significance and historical accuracy." According to THR, the discussions are said to have evolved into the possibility of creating a film adaptation of the book. Both Jolie's film and Braddock's book follow the love story between a female prisoner and a Serbian soldier, and it will be up to a judge to determine "whether the claimed obvious similarities meet the high threshold needed to prove copyright infringement," reports THR.
Sarkic is named as a co-defendant in the lawsuit, along with GK Films, FilmDistrict, and Scout Film. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 23, so if a judge sides with Braddock, we might not be seeing this on the big screen for a while!
