Brad Pitt Has "Issues" With His Christian Upbringing

Posted on Mon May 16, 2011 11:55 AM PDT

Pitt230.jpgBrad Pitt is at the Cannes Film Festival in France promoting his new film, The Tree of Life, in which he plays a dad. The actor opened up about his own childhood to reporters, and he seems a bit unhappy with how religiously he was raised ...

"I got brought up being told things were God's way, and when things didn't work out it was called God's plan. I've got my issues with it. Don't get me started. I found it very stifling."

Guess that means he and Angie aren't heading to church every Sunday. Pitt also said:

"I think of everything I do now that my kids are going to see when they grow up and how are they going to feel. But they know me as a dad and I hope they'll just think of me as a pretty damn good actor."

The film has been getting some strong reactions at the fest ... see what happened when the credits rolled at its premiere after the jump.

Reportedly, The Tree of Life got both boo-ed and applauded after its world premiere at Cannes. Buzz is that Pitt is hoping for an Oscar nom for the role.

your kids will be extremely proud of you brad! Probably way more than you realize! Your an icon

Posted by: Anonymous

couldn't agree more! a lot of brad's movies are just simply iconic!

Posted by: Anonymous

great actor it seems that nowadays actors just aren't that good like brad, clooney, damon and others

Posted by: HYPROCRITE

AAWWW...BOOO HOOO!!! Bradley boy has some "issues" with God...well..guess you need to get away from Angie & those hoodlems and GET A CLUE!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

You heard the Gracious words but possess no faith dude!

Posted by: Anonymous

I hate when these 'actors" with no education or preapration whatsoever believe that they are so INTELLECTUAL just because they made millions out of stupid movies...
Brad you are such an idiot and proof to that is the person that you choose as your partner

Posted by: Anonymous

go figure, a nice boy turned into an id.iot in Hollywood, how am I not surprised?

Posted by: Audaz

That's his problem what he chooses to believe, not ours.

Posted by: not

That is Angie talking not him.

Posted by: Anonymous

Get over it Brad......time to join church of Scientology w/Tom......lol. God Bless the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Posted by: anon

just because someone does not share your beliefs does not make them an idiot...and if you so believed in GOD, you would know that he always preached and practice... tolerance

Posted by: Anonymous

I love it when people commit adultery and live a sinful lifestyle try to make themselves look better by saying that have issues with God. Just because you don't believe doesn't mean He isn't there, Brad and Angie.

Posted by: Anonymous

that's too bad. What a strange example to set for his kids. He'll need to repent soon or he'll be in purgatory for a long time.

Posted by: Anonymous

It's Gods way, to allow you to make your own choices. God leads. It's up to us to follow. The fact that you & Jolie live in sin, and waste so much on selfish, self centered expenditures, doesn't make it right. You're good actors, but somewhat overpaid. It also might surprise you to know, some of us can't stand to watch your(mainly Jolies), movies anymore. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched one of her movies.

Posted by: Anonymous

Correction, you are GROSSLY overpaid! Between the two of you, the donations you make are a drop in the bucket, yet you brag, and accept big credits for them. Now you're preaching the "no God" theory? How dare you! You and old Angie have the makings of good cult leaders, and it's so sad to think, there are those out there, that wouldn't hesitate to follow.

Typical and cliche. But that's Brad. He has never had a thought or belief of his own. He has always gone with that of his female partner(s) over the years.

He has never been a very smart guy. But he can act.

Posted by: Anonymous

O....M.....G. This is sooooo typical of hollywood "stars." They basically denounce any formal beliefs they were raised on so they can justify a lifestyle of excess.

Posted by: Anonymous

Yep. Brad's gotta justify the lifestyle...sex, cheating, drugs, greed, etc., etc., etc.

What a guy.

Thank "GOD" his parents have other kids they can be proud of.

Posted by: Anonymous

Yeah, Brad Pitt has "issues" all right. Too many to list.

Posted by: Mary Jane Indica

I agree with Brad. I also have "issues" with religion and from it. I think growing up obsessed with pleasing god can make someone go crazy!!! Or at least really mess up their self-concept! Especially if you grew up anxious about the end of the world and were NOT a jehovahs witness. If you grow up questioning your sexuality in a catholic household then you might really hate yourself. Religion is this ever present reminder that we are worthless and unloved by god!! Even when church people are giving you a tract that says "god loves you" with their words they say god doesnt love or accept you! Its VERY confusing to a child who REALLY wanted to please god but is brainwashed to believe its NEVER enough! I think growing up that way puts people at risk for developing mental illness later in life. Imo, practicing christianity can exacerbate and contribute to manic episodes in bipolar people. Organized christianity is a mind fu** in the worst way! But the teachings of Buddha are very practical and productive ways of living and experiencing the world through The Noble Eightfold Path.

Americans' belief in the supernatural is mind boggling.

Posted by: Anonymous

Some of us don't believe we're unloved at all. Some of us don't, and never have read the Bible all the way through. Yet, we believe in God (always have and always will). I've known too many people that read their Bibles, and go to church faithfully, but haven't met one yet, that I care for, except for the very poor. Athiest are just as bad. In the end, an athiest will always call out for God. :)

Posted by: Anonymous

god is beyond our understanding or comprehension, it is in everything and is all things.
Christianity is a man made, and is wack.

Posted by: Anonymous

As are all religions with their differing beliefs. Only God knows for sure.

Posted by: Anonymous

This is all about selling the movie. I for one, have no desire to see it. Might watch it on the movie channels later on, for free. ; Sounds deep, and somewhat depressing. Like taking the long way around, to say something we all already know. Maybe a human version of Lion King? lol

Posted by: Amy

I don't know why people are claiming that the film loudly booed. It was only a couple of people. Almost all of the reviews were positive.

Posted by: Paula

Sounds like words straight out of Jolie's mouth.

Posted by: Anonymous

"God's way" and "God's plan"... Yeah, so what?!! Be humble enough Brad to recognize that you're only a human being, you have no control over nature, diseases and death. You're no Almighty. You're just human.

Posted by: Anonymous

lol at you haters. OMG!!! he doesn't believe in your imaginary friend!!! and yet he still devotes a good portion of his life to helping others!! It cracks me up how you godbots get so worked up when someone is open about not being deluded into thinking god(s) are real... it's like your faith is weak or something... and you can't handle someone standing up and calmly saying... hmmmm the emperor has no clothes! idiots.

Posted by: Anonymous

Sounds nondenominational. Try growing up Catholic (if you're a masochist).

Posted by: Anonymous

Also, to everyone else, the issue of justifying horrible acts in a world watched over by a supposedly just creator is an issue that people have been asking for eons. There's also a lot of really cool post-holocaust literature that deals with that. People always find a way to rationalize whatever they want to believe, in the end.

Posted by: Anonymous

It's because of God that you are here......turning your back on him....so uncool!

Posted by: Brad Pitt has Issues ???

And Many People have Issues with Brad Pitt signing p Dictator supporter and Millionaire Sean Penn, to be in his Movie (Note: Sean Penn supports violent dictators like Hugo Chavez)
Why Not give another Actor a break when there are many better actors than Penn --

Posted by: Silly X17

I love that all the religious people out there are calling him an idiot because he questions or disagrees with the idea of god. He's an idiot for not sharing your beliefs? They are just that- beliefs and because you believe them does not make them fact. The bible is just a book, altered to suit the purpose of the reader for hundreds of years. And your beliefs are just your opinion, nothing more. And everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. I'm sure you wouldn't care for being called an idiot for buying what the church is selling, would you?

Posted by: Careful about what you say

If Brad continues to state that he doesn't believe in God, this may be a point when the Christian right may say why should we support you by going to see your movie Tree of Life. God never hurt you, as you made your own decisions.. right or wrong

Posted by: Sandra Baker

Brad Pitt you are a fool...Your mom knows who is the better woman for you!!! WHY ON EARTH are you wasting time on artificial anorexic Ange with her puffy pillow lips, dreadful bony arms & hands and scribbled on skin???????????

X17 Poll

What went wrong on The X Factor today with Britney Spears?

Britney definitely had another meltdown. This is proof she's not ready to step back into the spotlight!
I think Britney may have overreacted to a bad audition, but it will be entertaining to watch later!
I think Simon Cowell planned this all along. Brit probably even rehearsed it!
