If you go to YouTube there are countless videos of the "old" Brit being classy and polished (e.g. interview with Diane Sawyer) or being cute and goofy (e.g. home video of her showing Kevin some of the lame dance moves that her and her school buddies used to make up). I was never a huge Britney fan before, but I do have Blackout and can't quit playing it. If you're into dance music, it's pretty good.

If you look up "Histrionic Personality Disorder" on Wiki, one of the symptoms is using sexuality to gain attention. This seems to be right up Brit's alley - but it could also be a "learned behaviour," I guess.
