TMZ has learned family members and professionals in Britney's life are working as a team to get her mental help -- either voluntarily or involuntarily -- for treatment of what appears to be a severe bipolar disorder.

We're told it's going to happen one way or the other, and fast. So far, Britney refuses to commit herself voluntarily, but the team is persisting.

Sources say they are considering "a number of options," some of which are "creative."

The most extreme option -- going to court and getting an order forcing Britney into in-patient treatment. That would be the last ditch effort.

If involuntary commitment is the only option, Brit must be picked up by cops -- again -- on a "5150," meaning she's a danger to herself or others. Then, while she's in the hospital, health care professionals can go to the County Public Guardian, who can then go to court and ask for what's called a "conservatorship." The conservator would then basically assume control of Brit's life.

If the judge grants the conservatorship, Brit could be involuntarily committed to a mental hospital. Again, that's not the only option and various alternatives are being discussed right now.

Considering the lifestyle her fans and NO one else has afforded her, she has always been remarkably distant and rude to them. I know a couple of kids in Kevin's family thought it was the coolest thing ever when he got with her and couldn't wait to meet her...she wouldn't autograph their CDs and they were family. They were little, too- like eight and ten or something.

I always found it incredibly ironic that Britney's fans are the most rabid, devoted bunch...if she had to pee so bad she was going to bust and one of her fans had a foot on fire, she's wait until she found a porta-potty, basically. Even when she had her "foundation", she would only go for a couple hours a year and play for the cameras...and once the cameras were off, it was like those ill and impoverished kids were invisible.

The involuntary mental health commitment isn't going to work. First, it has to start out with a detention by police or a mental health crisis team under the California Welfare and Institutions Code 5150. The "5150" hold is for up to 72 hours. During that time two professionals (psychiatrist and psychologist level) must observe and agree to continuation of the hold on one of three legal grounds: 1) DUE TO AN EXISTING MENTAL CONDITION, she is gravely disabled in that she cannot provide for her own necessities of life including food, clothing and shelter, AND that no one else will take responsibility for assisting her with the necessities of life or 2) DUE TO AN EXISTING MENTAL CONDITION she is a danger to herself, or 3) DUE TO AN EXISTING MENTAL CONDITION she is a danger to others.
Then, if a tentative mental health diagnosis is made by the two professionals and they hold her for 72 hours and want to continue to hold her they have to give her notice. She can then bring a Petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus and a hearing will be held in a few days. The issue in that hearing is whether or not the 72 hour hold can be extended for up to another 14 days (17 days total now). Again, the same three legal grounds are in issue. These hearings and the hold are called a W&I 5250 hearing (not 5150). IF the hearing officer or judge orders her to be held for up to another 14 days, they still cannot involuntarily give her psychotropic (mental health) drugs without either her voluntary consent or a court order. To get that medications order they have to go to court for a "Reise" hearing. Then, if the judge orders psychotropic drugs they can start giving her drugs. Now, the drugs take a number of days to start working and then have to be administered at regular intervals. Plus, it takes some time to get the right drugs in the right dosage. IF after the 72 hour detention and the 14 day hold (W&I 5150 and 5250) periods expire and she still is suicidal (suicide cases only) they can petition the court for another 14 days. This is rarely done. However, if during the 5250 14 day time period, she is unable to participate in making a reasonable discharge plan, and one or more of the 3 legal basis still exists (gravely disabled, danger to self or danger to others -- AND it is still due to a mental disorder) then and only then can the County apply for a TEMPORARY 30 day conservatorship. After THAT 30 days, there would be yet another hearing for a possible 6 month conservatorship -- and on and on and on. The treatment she needs would take much longer to diagnose, adjust the medications properly and get her into some long term therapy to sort out decades of building up to this.
In short, since the doctors at Cedar-Sinai already determined that Ms. Spears could be released after only 36 hours, I would be very shocked if Ms. Spears treatment originated through the involuntary process in California. Inherent in that decision to release her was a decision that she was not a danger to self or others or that even if she is a danger, it is not due to an existing mental disorder. She is an adult. As long as her conduct remains legal, Ms. Spears is free to spend her money, associate with whom she likes, engage in the family court system to regain access to her sons (or not) and there is absolutely nothing anyone can legally do to change that.

Even though Kevin didn't think that REHAB was a good place for BABIES (imagine that) Britney wanted to see the boys and Kevin didn't want them to forget her, so he took them up there a couple of times a week, even as SHE was trying to get him very limited visitation with his own sons.

Britney refused to attend things she was ordered by the court to attend- CONSTANTLY- and Gordon was ready to completely revoke visitation WEEKS ago because she only attended about 15% of her counseling/parenting sessions. (Kevin, on the other hand, has only missed ONE session out of more than thirty and it's because Jayden was sick and he didn't want to leave his son while ill) Kevin literally BEGGED for the monitored visitation to be allowed because he knows how much the boys love Britney and he doesn't want THEM to suffer for HER selfish actions.

If he were such a "bastard", why didn't he just let Gordon terminate Britney's rights after she missed the FOURTH deposition, like he wanted to?

Surely you are aware that court orders currently mandate that Britney is not allowed near her children? Oh yeah- and without Kevin's knowledge or consent, the LAPD issued a restraining order against Britney? THEY obviously feel her kids shouldn't just be "given back" to her. Do you KNOW how totally unstable you have to act for the state of California to legally restrain you from your own children?
Even if Kevin wanted to give Britney "her" kids back, (and he wouldn't- because he LOVES them and cares about their well being) he would be in contempt of a court order if he let her near those babies.

Whether you want to admit it or not, Britney did this to herself. Kevin actually helped stave OFF some of her craziness- NOT the other way around. Her life was most normal and placid when she was married to him. When Kevin was there, he kept her from binge drinking and gorging on amphetamine diet pills. HE made sure she ate healthy meals. HE took her drunk, off a BALCONY while she was holding newborn Jayden.
