That pap was one of the only nice ones to Brit when she was going nuts. He actually spoke up for her a few times. He did care about her and she did like him quite a bit. They also had the pleasure of cleaning up the snowstorm, which took them several hours to even make a dent at. They begged for a merciful end to the war and we complied with many an insult aimed at them in our sense of being winners and good sportsmen! Good Times!"

Wow, we played some pranks but had never had that kind of fun! The KY on other squads must be a national past time in the field! I watched with glee as someone dropped a E cylinder o2 tank (large tank) and it went rocketing off through 2 walls of the base! No one got hurt, so good fun!

The thicker the glove the bigger the boom! Used to ambo surf out in the middle of no where! Beat shooting out street lights with the spot light.

We used to get stuck standing by near shopping plazas in the middle of the night and would rearrange all the dumpsters behind the stores, blocking the staff entrances ect... just anything to kill time between stabbings! Really have to run now, have a great night! It was fun!

Ok have to share my most entertaining story, only because you will understand the relationships and humor of it!

My best/worst/funniest "ambo" experience took place during our 17th hour of our 16 hour shift. (U know how that last "quick" call goes) Partner and I had 3 yrs together on EMS and 2 on a private yahoo company, we later figured it out to be about 7800 hours of working together! We had the ability to “work without a word”. We were working the private. They had a 911 contract. We were a direct shot, just switched to our 2nd full diesel tank, 14" of snow, on a Saturday morning, and 7 mins to the call.

We lit it up and made it 3 mins and hit large log in the center of the highway, it was FUN, we shared the "you thinking what I'm thinking” look and my partner drove us almost right over the second log, this time we caught some air, another look of agreement and the third log was dead ahead; we nailed it with the passenger tire and while in the air, we heard an incredibly loud thug and then we landed. About 20 secs of pure laughter and I asked "did we blow out a back tire?". Partner was already pulling over; I grabbed the mic and took us off the call.

Upon exiting the squad I smelled fuel. We stood there and watched at least 30 gals of diesel POUR out. We were just outside the airport, so I grabbed the C-Com and requested Airport Fire Heavy for a fuel spill. My partner was contacting base and informed them we would need a hook, informed of our communication with C-Com for airport fire. I heard the newbie dispatcher as if we could “nurse” it back to base. My partner rolled his eyes and just handed the mic to me. I clarified the situation and told her we were pulling our equipment. So sitting there back to back on the drug box, center of the highway, Airport Fire pulls up. A minute later and our hook arrived.

Knowing the FD we were all socializing, they were riding us for holding them over shift. We watched the hook take our truck away and said goodbye to our FD buddies. And there we SAT back to back on a drug box in the center of the highway, in a blizzard. NO TRUCK, NO RADIO and it was 1993 so NO CELL PHONE! It actually took about 5 solid minutes for us to discuss the fact that the “newbie” dispatcher probably didn’t realize she would have to send another crew to get us and our equipment. So after total fits of laughter we began our “walk of shame”. So with a jump bag, two O2 tanks and our drugs, we walked to the Airport FD, where we were greeted with BIG smiles and given one phone call!

Just to clarify; The truck was accustomed to gun fire and rival gang attacks. The 911 contract was for a city with 79% poverty, so you can imagine the mindset after 16 hours of running.

Only on for a bit tonight. I worked as a firefighter for about 4 years before hating Rural Metro fire and left to become a cop for 3x the $ (but blew my shoulder in the academy and I'm glad I'm not a cop now). I once managed to catch fire once without fire! We were hucking 1# chunks of sodium metal into water for a demo and some of the metal exploded onto my dry clothing. We got a fire alarm call and it was a hot day and I had my jacket on. The sweat quickly caught the sodium on fire and I was in the rear backwards seat of the truck fighting a fire under my jacket before we stopped and I got hosed down for good! It actually caught my shirt and jacket on fire and I got some cool 2nd degree burns without the courtesy of an actual external fire! Gotta love that! A month later I was thrown through the front plate glass window of a house in an active fire when my scba malfunctioned and I ran out of air-hundreds of fun stories to tell, lots of them very nasty!

Another house fire about 2 hours after dinner. In the middle of the fire, one of the vets yelled to me he had to take a bad dump RIGHT THEN and he decided to use the toilet in the bathroom of a well burnt through but still very much on fire house (shit literally happens). He managed to pull off his airpack and jacket to get his pants off to crap while I urged him to hurry up outside! After a minute or 2, he then screamed something and I ran in to see him digging out a body in the bath tub (it was pitch black and completely smoke filled in there). The lady was kinda fat and took refuge in the bathroom from the fire. She was too large to fit thru the small window, so she crawled into the tub and turned on the water to keep herself alive-brilliant move, but the smoke got her, then the fire. It boiled her like a lobster by the time we found her-completely nasty to see! He didn't initially see her because the ceiling had already fallen down and the fire had destroyed the that part of the house completely. We never told anyone in the FD how we found her, because taking a dump in a fire might not have been viewed as a smart move and I was only a booter with just over a year in! I'm sure that fresh, unburned turd in the toilet made someone cleaning up later wonder WTF!

I saw and survived lots of wild shit working there. Saw one of our guys fall all the way thru the roof, inner ceiling, and onto the floor with a chain saw without getting a single scratch. I was right next to him when the roof went out under him! He was super stoked about that for some time! Shit like having having a flashover so hot it melted my Minimag on my helmet and exploded the batteries. I got a crescent shaped burn on my face where the nomex hood didn't cover that part of my face. We all also got some light steam burns from that one! I still loved FFing, but the pay was so horrible and so was the company we worked for (RMFD-for profit fire company, but not for its' workers!). Lots of other stories, but perhaps another night on another dead thread!

I made an early exit last night.
OMG I can never get over how MANY stories come from just a few years of my life! I worked EMS for 4 years and privates for 5. (simultaneously) About two weeks after the Private left us to fend for ourselves, we were called in by the owner and four of us asked to each take a squad and disappear for a few hours. The State Inspector was coming and the squads weren't going to pass. Partner and I, had discussed going to a different private, prior to that day. My partner and I used that day to put in an application. Two Medics pull up, in two of the competitor’s trucks to put in applications! We gained respect just by walking in the door. That afternoon the owner asked where we “hid” and we flat out told him the truth!!! He believed us a week later when he was giving us a body call and we quit over the air! A month later the other one was out of business, but due to double billing! ("Hiding" the trucks actually worked!)
After a year the new private was bought out by none other than .......Rural Metro. (they passed out rose colored glasses at first; Then.....well if you worked thier FD you understand!)

My eventual Husband and I were neighbors. He was a Corrections Officer testing for local PD’s. He took a spot with a midsize city outside of my residency requirements. By that time I was burned out. My wrists were shot and I had finished school. So I moved on. However, I too have lots of stories…. From Backboard sled rides to shots being fired and feeding snakes! It was fund! So in due time on dead threads! Yours by the way, are pretty hysterical! "Shit litterally happens" had me cracking up & your spontaneous combustion, now that is one for the books. (insert your own title here, LOL) I had some old-timer FD guys that made pretty interesting medics.
