And, if marriage is a religious affair, then the first amendment to the US Constitution forbids you to make a law like the defense of marriage act. Both of my kids are gay and while I fully agree that they should have full rights for civil union, the point here is the separation of church and state. Marriage is sanctioned under the auspices of the church and is recognized by our various governments (federal, state and local) as a general rule. To have the state agree to accept marriage would be like the state accepting excommunication... it sets a truly precedence. Gay couples should be provided ALL of the legal rights of a "marriage", that is beyond question, but the problem is the word marriage. It is properly a civil union and should be sanctioned by the various levels of government - else there is no anticipation of "civil" rights. I wouldn't wish to have our government (we the people) involved in church affairs... these people are already WHACK!! Stay out of my church!!
