Others are horribly misinformed or completely uninformed about issues of gender, sex, and sexuality. One's sex is not the necessarily the same as one's gender. Sex is (more) definable as the biological inherent maleness/femaleness, although in the case of a transgendered or intersexual person the idea of defining one's "sex" may still be difficult. "Gender" is a completely fluid and unstable term based on social/cultural/psychological/legal/religious/etc. constructs. Chaz's "sex" may (or may have not been) biologically male, but his assignation as "feminine" for most of his life was a socially constructed and therefore artificial and arbitrary categorization. Chaz has felt himself to be "masculine" in his gender and is in the process of making his sex align with that. One's sexuality is even more difficult to define. Chaz loves women, and his gender and/or sex does not affect his preference. So Chaz is queer (as in, not definable by heteronormative constraints), so what?

I am not surprised to see all the negative, ignorant reactions and comments on this listserv. I am a 40 year old man of transgender experience (I am a psychologist, own my own home, have lots of friends, and live a very full life). As Chaz put it, gender is not between your legs, it's between your ears. It's also about one's core sense of self. In terms of Chaz' girlfriend. Research shows that woman, in general, are far more fluid in their choice of sex partners, even if they identify as gay or straight, and I am glad to see her getting out and supporting him, as an ally. GOOD for her, good for him and good for Cher.
