Ellen DeGeneres "Devastated" Over Gay Teen's Suicide

Posted on Thu Sep 30, 2010 04:30 PM PDT

Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, 18, committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after his college roommate (allegedly) secretly videotaped him having sex with another male.

In the wake of this - as well as many other recently reported deaths involving gay teens - talk show host Ellen DeGeneres voiced her grief. Watch her video above. So, so sad.

RIP.

it is what it is.......

The whole gay pride thing is hideous.

Posted by: Anonymous

This Ellen person is demented.

Posted by: Anonymous

It's not a gay issue. It's a shame and invasion of privacy issue.

Posted by: Anonymous

Teenage suicide is big not just among gays. Teenagers can be cruel about numerous things that lead to many a teenagers to take their lives. Why not speak up about teenage suicide in general and not just amongst gays? Is that being reverse prejudice? ...I don't know.

Posted by: Anonymous

Ya well your right it's tragic that the college student felt so bad that he offed himself. If I could of I would of told him not to over react to his thoughts and feelings, that it will pass and it's really no biggie. Unfortunately he probably wouldn't have felt so humiliated if he were kissing a girl....

Posted by: Anonymous

I have never met a truly mentally healthy gay person.

Posted by: Anonymous

The reason it's for the gay teens specifically is because gay teens are 4x more likely to commit suicide than straight teens. Of course it's terrible anytime someone does it, but it's a little more of a crisis amongst gays. That being said, anyone that kills themselves over being bullied for any reason whatsoever made a stupid mistake. I can't say there are no good reasons out there to do it, but bullying goes away and there are ways to fix it.

Posted by: Anonymous

The person at 5:20 and 5:36 seems like a nice person but it really blows the mood for making wise crack jokes.

Posted by: Camp

Bully is tragic for someone who suffered it never goes away. I am probably be a suicide into few weeks, no kidding.

Posted by: Anonymous

A crime was committed against him. However I don't see responsibility on the offenders for his choice to commit suicide.

Posted by: Anonymous

Do you think any normal human being would ever choose to be gay?? I'm 40 and thinking about coming out.. it's not easy.. and I am in huge pain, torment and filled with anxiety. That poor kid. Those poor kids. So sad.

Posted by: Anonymous

To the person at 5:56, don't let anybody bully you into suicide. You can slowly make the thoughts and feelings that torment you melt away by not over reacting to cruelty. Face them patiently and it will pass. Besides there is no evidence that the afterlife would be better than living. At least you have some control over your self while your alive. CHEER UP! and fight back!

Posted by: Anonymous

Teenage bullying is unnecessary and Mr. Clementi's death is tragic....I wish Mr. Cruise and other "Scientologists" would come out with a PSA on bullying. Overweight girls are bullied as much well as gay males. Kirstie Alley should speak out against this intolerance.

Posted by: Anonymous

Gay teen issue. I think that most of gays live with thier mother without their fathers.Their parents are divorced. Gay teens are so confused who they are and depressed so greatly. They need to have their own role of their fathers. Very important to have their fathers are there for them all time when their parents are divorced. If fathers are not there for them, it would kill them.

Posted by: captain america

there simply are NO gays!!
you're a loving lesbian or a dirty & sick F*GGOT!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

Haters, racists and bullies are the BIGGEST CACA in the universe. They stink and they are the sh*ttiest kind of human beings.

Posted by: Anonymous

You may not like the lifestyle of a person but you must respect the person anyways. That's the problem in our society. Respect is now a myth.

Posted by: Anonymous

our society is too sexual, that's the issue in that case. the bullies targeted Clementi because he was gay but I believe they were mostly excited to watch the sex video. sex, sex, sex all the time. sex in movies, sex on the net, sex in music videos, sex in reality tv, sex in cartoons, sex in the church, sex scandals ruining role models in sports, SEX IN EVERYTHING!!! that's the problem: SEX ADDICTION. Clementi is dead because he because his bullies were sex addicts that used him for their voyeurism needs.

Posted by: Anonymous

Glad Ellen is taking a stand. Bottom line the Internet is posing serious privacy issues, and this needs to be addressed with new laws. Bullying via the Internet seems so benign, but it hurts people.. also a need for ne laws with this new technology.

Posted by: Anonymous

She sucks hot rocks.. what else? Normal is aberrant behaviour to her, or she would say, it's tragic ANYONE would kill themselves or another.

Posted by: Anonymous

As a straight woman, if this had been done to me I would have been mortified. To be taped doing something private without your knowledge or consent is humiliating. I feel so sad for Tyler's family. I live in North Jersey and went to Rutgers not all that long ago.

Posted by: Anonymous

she says people will change...well people wont. People will always be offended by gays, including me. Yes it's a tragedy that he died but there are a lot of young teens that are not gay and take their own lives. Bullying has been around forever. I was bullied in school, but I dealt with it as do a lot of people when they are growing up. And I guess 6.24 is an atheist, "no evidence that the afterlife would be better than living."?? I guess that would depend on how you good or bad you were. By the way suicide is a sin, so you are somewhat right and (yes we are all sinners and who am I to throw stones...)suicide is a kick in the face to Jesus. He gave you your life, died for you on the cross. Suicide is not the answer. You just have to pick yourself up, brush yourself off and keep going. We are all hit with hardships why should gay tragedy's stick out...oh yeah 'coz Ellen is the what, the spokeswoman for gays and anyone else doesn't deserve that attention.

Posted by: Anonymous

I have never read such moronic posts...
Especially you..anonymous at 8:22 people will always be offended by gays. REALLY???? NO they won't...just stupid, prejudiced, small minded morons who look towards Jesus for every answer to everything.....You should be ashamed of your discusting comments. I guarantee that someone in your family is gay.....and probably hiding it because of people like YOU!

Posted by: Anonymous

Good for you Ellen. So glad you took the time to talk about this. People are ignorant and uneducated, and so wrong in their treatment of mankind. Most everyone who commented here needs to actually get themselves an education and remember that they are human beings and a good decent human has compassion, respect and tolerance.
Shame on you ignorant people.

Posted by: Anonymous

To all US gays:
Welcome to Europe,to feel the 21st century, where people are evolved, cultivated and tolerant, saddly, the US is rotten with ignorance, religious fanatism and radical hate groups

I hear you Ellen and as the mother of three boys, god help them if they are ever involved in anything that changes the life of another human bein by being intolerant or bullies. Two are in there 20's but one is eight. It has been my policy while my older two were in school to each day tell me how they made someone's life better. I expect that of my eight year old. My boys are all popular and kind. They are human and have done some things that as adults they aren't proud of but they also have stories and even thanks from kids they went to school with that told them that their acts of kindness did make a difference. I won't have my kids picking on others or treating anyone different for being who they are. How dare those kids who set up that young man do that and I hope they get a long prison sentence for murder. My heart goes out to all the families and please no that we are changing our thinking and a lot of us are teaching our kids to be tolerant and kind. It is a time for change and the change will need to be the most apparent in our lifetime. So anyone who is suffering in silence or is being victimized..hang in there and I promise you that as you grow you will get threw it and again, a lot of people are working on changing the attitudes of the younger generation. We need to pull together and do something different like taking care of each other and really love our neighbors and watch out for our kids, they are our future. There is nothing wrong with someone who is different and if being gay is a sin, let god handle it..

Posted by: joe

wait a minute, that was not an invasion of privacy..the kid turned on his own web cam on his own computer in his own room and it is not illegal to post it on the web..that boy and girl should be left alone, it is not thier fault the kid could not live up to his own perversions

Posted by: Shannon

To the posters who blame Tyler Clementi for being gay and for killing himself,YOU ARE ALL COMPLETE MORONS. Closed-minded people like you are the reason why Tyler and so many other gay teens have committed suicide. I wish you knew how ignorant and illiterate you sound. And for those of you using religion as an excuse to gay-bash, Jesus and God would be ashamed of you. Being a Christian is supposed to be about loving and accepting all people, no matter what skin they are in, or who they choose to love (and please don't include rapists and child molesters, because that's not what I'm talking about). God made gay people just like He made straight people. Get over your own hatred instead of telling people to "get over" being bullied and harassed.

Posted by: Anonymous

Hey 8:22 have you ever opened a science book???? Your a complete bigot. The reason I am ashamed of the my country and the direction its going. How is the gay community "offending" you? I thought we lived in the land of the free? How dare you impose your religious beliefs and ideals on others. Its called separation of church and state and equality for all. Maybe you should take an American History class.

Posted by: Anonymous

Hate and prejudice, usually born of fear and ignorance, created the shame that killed Tyler Clementi. These same culprits create wars.

Cure yourself of your ignorant ideas, and less kids will have to die. Don't post here and expose yourselves as part of the cabal of fearful or righteous people who create a culture that so shames innocent children, that they would rather jump off a bridge than admit who they are.

Open your hearts so you can feel some sympathy for this child and his family, rather than vent your bigotry.

Posted by: Stephen

Ignorance and hate is still running this country. The US will never evolve and move forward when its citizens can't accept people for who they are regardlesss of color, sexual orientation, and religion.

Posted by: Anonymous

Give me an effin break, everything is a hate crime now.
Celebs have no common sense.

Posted by: Anonymous

This is just not an issue in the US. It's an issue all through out the world. There are places where people would not come out as gay because it has not been done. People would just assume your are gay. But the real issue here is bullying and what are the politicians, educators, adults doing about this issue. Why are they still kids out there who think it is okay to treat another human being so awfully. Kids learn from the elders. We should all change if we want to see a change in our kids. Learn to respect, no point preaching about freedom of speech and world peace and crap if we all fail to just be HUMANS.

Posted by: KK

@ 8:31 p.m...... You have bigger problems. You should be ashamed of your grammar and spelling.

Posted by: Anonymous

Hey KK..get a life and say something important

Posted by: Anonymous

I'm a Christian and I believe some people are "born" gay and some just "choose" to be gay. However, I don't judge (only God can) and I'm totally against bullying of any kind. My heart goes out to the family who just lost their son. May he rest in peace! As a country, we are pretty open-minded and tolerant when it comes to race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. The majority of the world (middle east, asia, africa...) are completely dead set against anyone who is gay and if one is to "come-out" they would stone you to death or make it impossible to live.

Posted by: Anonymous

How about this folks...those who have opinions either way about homosexuality, disregard the fact the this man was a homosexual. Focus on the fact that it is NEVER acceptable to tape someone's intimate moments without them knowing and broadcast them on the internet for anyone who wants to watch! It's a serious invasion of privacy and a malicious way to exploit someone! How would it affect you? It may not drive you to kill yourself, but I guarantee your life would be greatly affected. Rest in peace everyone who was so tormented they escaped through suicide.

Posted by: Anonymous

omg all you haters, i spit in your faces

Posted by: Anonymous

Its people like those who have posted cruel comments about homosexuals that are the reasons for homosexual suicide. Everyone is human wether gay or straight. Everyone needs to be humbl and acknowledge this horribly sad incident, take it into consideration and stop thinking so much about our selves. We may not see it but we do have big impacts on the stability of others. We have to learn from this mistake to prevent it in the future. Judge all you want but dont let this judgement affect others. Everyone may have their own opinions but its how you act upon your opinions that affect society. BE HUMBLE! Ellen griefs over a lost that could be prevented. Homosexuality may be a sin but also judging, lieing and/ or treating thy neighbor like how many do. by KAMUELA

Posted by: JH

To all you gay bashers who R you to judge?!! God says treat everyone as you want to be treated. Your insecure!
PS I'm NOT gay just a person who was taught only God judges

Posted by: Anonymous

It's funny huh?
straight people (love those labels) will burn in the same hell for pre-marital sex, divorce, greed, materialism, race mixing, murderers, thiefs that steal company time online rather than working,it's just a joke to be alive and constantly see that thru out history the "gay" is always the scapegoat and no one sees there own sins, as choices.
I say love one another, forgive and learn patience and understanding.
Life can be an exciting journey, just live yours and let others live their own.

some of the people who have commented on this clip must not have actually watched it. Ellen wasn't only speaking out against the hardships experienced by gays, lesbians and transgenders - she was speaking out against bullying in general: "To ANYONE out there who has felt different ... I know how you feel." Ellen wasn't turning this into a "gay issue" as some nimrod above has suggested - she wasn't saying that only gaybashing was wrong. But she was using the deaths of four gay teens to illustrate the fact that "teenage bullying is becoming an epidemic in this country, and that suicide rates are climbing." True, it took the deaths of four gay students to bring her attention to the fact, but you'll at least notice in the clip that her sympathies were extended to all teens who feel different, for whatever reason (sexuality, gender, ethnicity, religion, body...). My sympathies go out to all the people who felt that suicide was their only recourse. It's a terrible thing to feel like you have lost possession over your own body. Those who have so insensitively suggested that teens like Tyler should have just sucked it up have clearly never been bullied - or lost anyone dear to them.

To be honest im 15 from the uk and yeah im bi sexual proud of it but its not just that you lose everyone you feel completely cut off like for instance i feel totally suicidle because i havent got anyone apart from my mum and yeah like its wrong to get bullied for your sexuallity but its not just that its that teenagers getting bullied for every little thing like i get bullied for my looks and for how i dress and my religion also my seuxality and yeah it does drive you to the edge and no matter how much people tell you its gonna be okay it never is to you.i hope that made sense abit.

Since I was a child I noticed that within me lies a homosexual soul. I tried my best to stop it and neglect the idea but i failed. I am used to being bullied. My schoolmates used to ask me if i'm a fag. Some would even shout at me calling me a fag in public. what i did to survive it? I proved them that my sexuality is not a basis of my worth as a person. God gave me a wonderful gift. I used to be a top student in the class and won lots of math competitions in and outside the country. those bullies stopped insulting me maybe because they realized that they are just a piece of junk compared to a gay like me. for all gays out there, just don't be affected. Pursue your dreams. Life should not be wasted since we will be living our mortal life just once.

What went wrong on The X Factor today with Britney Spears?

Britney definitely had another meltdown. This is proof she's not ready to step back into the spotlight!
I think Britney may have overreacted to a bad audition, but it will be entertaining to watch later!
I think Simon Cowell planned this all along. Brit probably even rehearsed it!
