Giuliana Rancic and her husband Bill chatted with The Today Show's Matt Lauer yesterday, and the couple opened up about her struggle with breast cancer and her recent double mastectomy.

"It was definitely hard," Giuliana told Matt. "I knew this was going to be a tough surgery. I in no way want to minimize it. Yes, I'm two and a half weeks out, my gosh. Up until a week and a half ago, it was hell. It was horrible." However, Giuliana has already returned to work at E!, and she hopes that sharing her story will help educate women and raise awareness for the disease.

"She wanted to turn the negative into a positive," Bill explained. "I think the response - the number of people who've said, 'I went and got my first mammogram,' or 'My wife got her first mammogram' [is] worth it. If you can save one life through this process, you're turning this negative into an incredible positive."

Giuliana Rancic To Undergo Double Mastectomy

Dec 5, 2011 08:59 AM

rancic-double-mastectomy.jpgTV personality Giuliana Rancic will have a double mastectomy and immediate reconstruction, she announced this morning on The Today Show.

Giuliana and her husband Bill Rancic chatted with Ann Curry and revealed that after some careful consideration, this was the only option for them. "For me, it was important to get the cancer out," the E! host said. "That's what I wanted to do, just get it out ... At the end, to be honest, all it came down to was just choosing to live, and not looking over my shoulder for the rest of my life." Rancic was diagnosed with breast cancer back in October, and she is set to have the procedure next week.

Rancic said her husband's support helped her make the decision to have both of her breasts removed. "Bill said to me, 'I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid,'" she said. "He said, 'I don't care what you look like, I don't care about the physical portion of this.' And that certainly helped me come to a decision." She added, "I couldn't be more at peace with the decision. But it's hard, and I still break down some nights ... But I'm okay."

"Am I scared? Yes. Scared of the unknown. Scared of the pain," Rancic confesses. "But I'm not scared of what I'll be like. I'll have scars, but I like scars. Scars are beautiful because they tell a story. I'll be able to say that I survived something major and it's made me stronger. I will be a better woman for it."

E! personality Giuliana Rancic, 37, announced Monday morning that she has breast cancer.

The reality star and host revealed on Today that doctors discovered the cancer when giving her a mammogram as part of IVF treatment -- Rancic has been public with her multi-year struggle to get pregnant. She said of the discovery:

"It was just a kick in the stomach ... I was just a few days away from going to Colorado to get IVF ... It was incredible, instant sobbing ... 36 years old, no family history ..."

Rancic said she must undergo surgery and six weeks of radiation therapy, but that because the cancer was caught early, her prognosis is good. She will then continue her quest to become pregnant.

"I still want this baby ... this baby has saved my life. I truly feel God was looking out after me … If I had gotten pregnant later down the line, I could have been a lot sicker."

Giuliana Rancic and her husband are doing whatever it takes to get pregnant, and the E! News host says that involves more than 60 IVF shots per day, according to UsWeekly.

As for who is doing the injecting, Guiliana, 36, says, "Bill could honestly be on Grey's Anatomy. He could be McRancic."

Bill, 39, who says the couple's miscarriage was hard on their marriage, recently told Popeater.com:

"We took a much needed break from all the fertility stuff to connect with each other again. We had been trying for so long to have a child that the whole process had consumed us. A break was crucial to make sure our marriage stayed strong and as fun as it always was."

Although they are crossing their fingers that IVF will work again, the couple has plan B ready just in case. Giuliana adds, "We've gotten probably 40 women who have offered to be surrogates."

What went wrong on The X Factor today with Britney Spears?

Britney definitely had another meltdown. This is proof she's not ready to step back into the spotlight!
I think Britney may have overreacted to a bad audition, but it will be entertaining to watch later!
I think Simon Cowell planned this all along. Brit probably even rehearsed it!
