Golden Globes Executive On Ricky Gervais: "Some Things He Said Were Totally Unacceptable"

Ricky Gervais' hosting duties for last night's Golden Globes continue to stir up controversy, and now the Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, Philip Berk, is speaking out.

As for the British comedian's off-colored remarks during the ceremony, Berk tells the Hollywood Reporter:

"Some of the things he said were totally unacceptable. He definitely crossed the line. And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky."

The HFPA has reportedly been fielding numerous calls from reps who are saying their A-list clients were offended by his jokes. Berk is denying that the HFPA knew what Gervais would be saying during the show. He adds:

"I had absolutely no idea what Ricky was going to say so anything I heard was heard was the same time you heard it. When you hire Ricky Gervais, you expect the unexpected."

Berk also denies the host was lectured during the show saying the claim is "ridiculous." He tells the HR, "He was never called on the carpet, or given a warning or anything else."

The HFPA wouldn't comment on whether Gervais would be asked back next year to host.

Do you think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is excited about all the attention this is getting ... or do you think they're honestly disappointed at Gervais' hosting duties?

oh loosen up you bunch of sticks in the mud! ricky lit up the whole show. come on, with those riciculous acceptance speeches, thank God he was there. i wish he would of had more air time.

Ha! I guess "The Invention of Lying" didn't teach him a thing. LOL I love him! He tells it like it is.

The Hollywood egomaniacs deserved this. Well done Ricky.

Robert De Niro was more offensive than Ricky, but like them both.

I thought he was funny, but this was not the venue for those jokes. It was an awards show, not a roast or a comedy show.

I've seen a lot of Golden Globes over the years and this was one of the worst.

Robert DeNiro did not offend me at all. Ricky was way over the line. I admit it made me laugh, but it was not appropriate for the Golden Globes.

I blame those who hired him. They got what they asked for and can't complain now.

1:58 You are exactly right. Not at all appropriate for the Golden Globes.

I have to add that Ricky was being Ricky and I have always found him funny. But he is clearly not the right host for this show.

Those who hired him are the only ones to blame if anyone was offended. What were they thinking? Much better choices, Ellen, Rosie O'Donnell, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, etc., etc,. etc.

My vote is for Queen Latifa as host next year! She is funny, classy and knows her audience.

If ya didnt want to do the show you should have declined the invitation. What a maroon!

loved him. if they didn't expect his brand of humor, they didn't do their homework and got what they deserved. the GG are boring and pathetic without him. i suspect that they secretly love the controversy.

hes a comedian for goodness sakes, comedians shouldnt be given boundaries, they shoulda hired someone else. A-list celebs thinking they are all that.

Posted by: Anonymous

Me loved it

Posted by: Anonymous

You hired him knowing this is the kind of comedy he does. You only have yourselves to blame

Posted by: Anonymous

I thought he was hilarious. Celebrities need to relax.

queen latifa? no way, this is an awards show not a clambake!

These people are in Showbiz, yet haven't developed a thick skin? Get a life whiners. He was funny. Some people need to get the hell over themselves and get a sense of humor.

Posted by: Anonymous

Can't say I'm a fan but they knew what they were signing up for, he had said publicly he intended to offend people.
I think the precious celebs need to grow thicker skins and lighten up.
The show would just be dull gushing if he hadn't brought them back down to earth. All a lot of these stars must hear is 'yes-men' praising them non-stop, they're not used to being humble and making fun of themselves. At least some of them did funny speeches.
If you want to see celebs fawning over their agents and other behind the scenes folks then you watch what the Oscars has recently become. It's dull and that's why the ratings have gone down for it.
I mean how funny are Anne Hathaway and James Franco going to be (I like Anne but she's not qualified for a show like the Oscars, that should be for Steve Carell, Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg and the like)?!

do not understand how people can be so sensitive in silly things, I think is a matter of taste and I liked it, I understand some people do not but to make such a big deal is pathetic, so tired of these sensitive people that are looking for an excuse to get offended ..get a life!! there are more important things in this world

Laughter works like a
medicine, it cheers up the soul. He should host the Oscars, that would be a blast.

Posted by: Anonymous

I've always thought the golden globes were boring until now.
He is the funniest and most clever host that I can recall.
I wasn't expecting to laugh so much. He was brilliant. I agree with 9:38. He should host the Oscars. There's too much a$$ kissing that goes on at these shows, so boring. He's only relaying what most people are thinking.

I just wonder what got censored in the show...in some parts sound went off for some seconds..

Regarding Robert De Niro...
So any critic to the goverment is offensive...there are some true idiots commenting here.

What did they expect when they hired him? Morons

What went wrong on The X Factor today with Britney Spears?

Britney definitely had another meltdown. This is proof she's not ready to step back into the spotlight!
I think Britney may have overreacted to a bad audition, but it will be entertaining to watch later!
I think Simon Cowell planned this all along. Brit probably even rehearsed it!
