Jay-Z: "'We Are The World' Is Untouchable"

Of all the critics of the remake of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie's historic We Are The World, Jay-Z is one of them.

One half of the most successful couple in entertainment this year explained to MTV News why he nor his better half appeared on the recent remake.

"I know everybody is gonna take this wrong," Jay began at the 2 Kings dinner Sunday night. "'We Are the World,' I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think 'We Are the World' is like [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller' to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched. I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. I applaud the efforts: [Millions have been raised] through text [donations] to Haiti. So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but 'We are the World' is [musically] untouchable like 'Thriller' is untouchable. Some things are just untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable."

Instead, Jay suggested they should have written a new song, like the one he, Rihanna and U2's Bono and the Edge premiered at the Hope for Haiti Now telethon (which didn't garner great reviews from critics.)

What do you think?

I agree with Jay! Couldn't they have come up with something better?

Should "We Are The World" have been remade?
Yes! It was a great tribute to the original!
No! They should have left it alone and come up with something new!

He should just STFU and go pork his fat wife.

He's right, another song just for Haiti should've been written, what? have we run out of ideas?

pompous asshole, look at Eric Clapton's song "Leila" huge hit!! untouchable! Eric did a totallly different interpretation on Unplugged, it was a huge hit too! same song, both ways fantastic. could happen with this too. he just wants the in-DUH-vidual attention he gets by being the know it all complainer, instead of getting in there with the group for this cause. shame on you and your wife, it's NOT all about you!!!!! :(

Thanks to Jay Z for some GD COMMON SENSE.

@12:52 - It's spelled LAYLA you dumb bitch.

That's exactly what I thought - they should never have done the song over again and who even knows half of those singers? Justin Beiber?!?!

I agree with the DUMB, JUST for this time. I think some people simply want to ruin Michael J. image again, like those assholes that filled all those massonic symbols during "we are the world" song at his memorial.
Stupid idiots, Michael Jackson didn't belong to you, he did belong and belongs to the people around the world that have always loved him.
There is no respect for Michael Jackson..again. Plus why his murderer isn't in jail???

Amen to what Jay said love him.

See,i don't like Jay,but i agree with him this time. The remake was a failure, half of the singers were/are unknown artists with no talent and the song was ruined.
I hate Jay-Z,but i must admitt he's right.We are the world is a classic,that should've never been touched.The new version is horrible.

He's right about not doing the song over. I believe most of the singers of today have no originality, but Jay Z should practice what he preaches. He and his borderline talented wife have reused other lyrics and melodys in their own songs!

I agree with J.Z. although he takes classic songs and steals them all the time hypocrate. id expect all the so called artist to be able to come up with a song for haiti that represents. these people are lazy and half of them have no real talent thus its easier to steal a song

This part is optional!
