I wouldn't pay a penny to see that garbage .The critics have already trashed it.Rotten Tomatoes has the critics score as 51% rotten.Haa..Haa.She thought by taken her huband from his coffin and acting together in this poor exuse for a movie ,would make famous again like in her Bennifer days.It backfired and her rep in Hollywood is worse than ever.

I really dislike JLO, but love him and his music. The movie was great! Just to listen to Marc sing the songs of Hector Lavoe was amazing! I understand why "non-spanish" speaking critcs wouldn't like it, that's OK, most latino's (salsa lovers) whom have seen it, liked it.

As long as the salsa fans enjoy it, thats what matter. Again, really enjoyed the movie. Gotta get the sound track.

Actually, rottentomatoes has El Cantante at 22%. General consensus is that it is "indistinguishable from other musical biopics," which sounds about right, judging from the previews. The music probably is great - I like salsa - but the film itself looks totally average. And JL annoys the fuck out of me. Maybe if she could actually sing I'd like her better, but as it is...no. She is pretty, though.

She's still a triple threat! The soundtrack is kickin' and the movie is allright, though I would have considered it more "rental worthy".

This is going to sound unforgivably glib, but in "El Cantante," Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have created what amounts to the "Gigli" of music biz biopics. And it's not just the fact that the film pairs "Gigli" co-conspirator Lopez with her hombre del momento – in this case, Latin crooner Marc Anthony, playing late salsa legend Hector Lavoe.
No, the comparison is apt because "El Cantante," like "Gigli," is a moribund, misconceived vanity project that's often unbearable to watch. Rarely has a film exhibited less emotional knowledge of its subjects, or extended less real sympathy to them.

Well, El Cantante isn't going to teach anyone about Hector Lavoe, and it isn't going to deepen anyone's appreciation either; I learned more about the man from spending ten minutes with his Wikipedia entry than I did by spending two hours with El Cantante this morning. The movie doesn't build on an already-extant affection for the man; it depends upon it entirely. The Lavoe of the movie is a total cold fish, an emotionless bumbler who barely even tries to keep his dangerous appetites in check and who seems singularly undevoted to craft or artistry. Maybe that's because Marc Anthony, who plays Lavoe, isn't an actor; he's a singer, and he only seems alive in this character when he's onstage singing. The rest of the time, he just sits there bemused while stuff happens to him. The music is good enough that the movie never becomes a total waste, but it definitely wasn't worth my eleven dollars, and it probably won't be worth a spot in your Netflix cue when the DVD comes out in a couple of months either.

Marc showed better acting abilities than J-Lo. She has not talent as an actress, my advice to her is to hold on to Marc, because that's all she has left in life. She is so lucky to have someone as accomplished for a husband. She is nothing without Marc plain and simple.

I just watched "El cantante". Regardless of how one feels about JLo or Mark, the film is very well crafted, immensely entertaining, and a great accomplishment. Congrats to all those involved!! It was excellent!
