Severe abdominal pains and evidence that Britney Spears had been "cutting herself" led her psychiatrist Dr. Deborah Nadel to seek hospital treatment for the troubled pop singer.

Here's the latest, based on my sources both inside ''Camp Britney'' and at UCLA Medical Center:

• uAmong the things that led Spears' shrink to insist on the entertainer's immediate hospitalization early Thursday was she was suffering severe abdominal pains, which were brought on by either real or imagined reactions to the medications prescribed to help with her bipolar disease, and possibly that ''she had been taking laxative tablets like they were Life Savers, more than a dozen a day,'' said a Spears insider.

• uIn addition, Nadel was concerned by physical evidence Spears had been ''cutting herself'' -- both on her arms and legs. She also reportedly had marks on her feet that indicated she had stabbed herself repeatedly with a pencil.

• uThe battle for control of Spears' trust continues among Lynne and Jamie Spears, Sam Lufti (the man she told an admitting nurse at UCLA Medical Center was her ''personal soul mate'') and on-again, off-again beau Adnan Ghalib. ''She is so clearly bipolar,'' said a longtime assistant. ''One moment she's crying and begging her mother for help ... the next she's screaming profanities at her. The same goes for Sam [Lufti] and Adnan,'' who the source predicts will soon be out of the picture.

• uSpeaking of control -- Spears supposedly has rewritten her will and changed certain aspects of her financial power-of-attorney documents in the past 48 hours. ''She also has altered the amounts of money people authorized can withdraw from her checking accounts,'' said my source. ''She also added Sam to a couple of accounts he wasn't on before.''

However, as of late Thursday, Spears had yet to sign a medical power of attorney form at the UCLA Medical Center psychiatric ward, allowing her parents (or Lufti) control over decisions regarding her treatment.

It was thought her doctors -- in concert with Spears' parents -- would go into court to achieve that without her permission.

• uNurses at the hospital were complaining Thursday about Britney's language. ''She doesn't utter a sentence without it being jampacked with lots of 'f-this' and 'f-that,' " said a veteran medical center staff member.

• uWhile Dr. Phil McGraw certainly has caught a lot of flak over his involvement in the Spears case, sources both close to him and Spears' mother, Lynne, confirm the TV advice guru and the senior Spearses are not as estranged as has been reported. ''Lynne is still upset that Dr. Phil has talked too much about Britney, but he was the one who recommended Dr. Nadel to them as a psychiatrist he trusted -- especially concerning treatment for bipolar disease in young women,'' said a Lynne Spears pal.

The fortysomething, Santa Monica-based Nadel has an excellent reputation in the Los Angeles area, reportedly holding a patient roster that ''reads like a Who's Who list,'' said a UCLA Medical Center source familiar with her practice. ''Though most of her patients are not entertainers.''

• uEven though it's unclear where Spears could move to ensure more privacy (maybe the moon?), I'm also hearing a couple of real estate agents have been contacted about putting the singer's Studio City gated mansion up for sale.

What makes this different is NOT that she's a celebrity, one who's image did not mirror the reality of who this chick is and was all along., but that that image and her tearing it down by letting her true self come forward has captivated so many.

People on here and elsewhere decry the paparazzi and media for "hounding" her 24/7. But it's not their fault. It's all the world's fault for wanting to follow this tale of disaster. The whole car wreck by the side of the road thing.

Is she mentally ill? Probably. Is she a drug addict? Likely. Is it high stress after all the years of "being on"? Yep. Is she/was she doing all this weird behavior stuff out of a desperate need for attention or as a cry for help? I'd say, both. It's a combination of all these and a some more.

This stuff isn't simple one thing only. It's a complex myriad number of things made up of biological and psychological.

To the fans, this mess, this Britney Spears runaway train, was 26 years in the making and it might just take that long again to get her back on track, if ever. I don't think you're going to see her in the studio for quite some time, if ever. As for being on the stage again. I wouldn't be surprised to never hear of her doing such a thing again.

If her family can get her back to Kentwood and get her to the point where the idea of hanging out in Hollywood is repugnant to her then they have made a big leap ahead for her well being.

This is not a simple case. And this is probably the worst case of a child star reaching adulthood we've seen to date. And there's been hundreds of horrific cases of child stars going down this road. I give Kevin a lot of credit for stepping up and raising the boys, What I dont understand is why he feels the need to live in such a big big mansion, A three bedroom house would suite a family that size fine. So I guess you could say he is also taking away from their college fund. Go buy a farm and raise the boys in wide open spaces away from the media,Also I feel Britney seeing her children would help in her recovery,Britney didnt give up on the boys it was her illness. I pray for a speedy recovery.And stop bashing her family they did nothing WRONG.

He looks worried only because he has a 500K legal bill coming up that he and his shark Kaplan are sweating for Brit Brit to pay. He's a single parent SO WHAT?? He is young and capable of working to provide for his kids like single mothers do (and some dads I know). I really do not believe he is all that worried about her well-being - he's probably worried about the outcome of the custody case blowing up in his face and his gravy train coming to a halt. He needs more than 20K to take care of two little boys?? There are people who make that in a year just by working. He makes me sick. I am happy her parents are coming to her rescue and cleaning house of all the riff raff.
