Rapper Lil Wayne aka Dwayne Carter has been released from Rikers Island jail in New York after serving only eight months of his one-year sentence.

Carter's time in jail stemmed from 2007, when he was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon following a performance at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan.

This charge could have resulted in 15 years behind bars, but in exchange for a guilty plea, his time behind bars was greatly reduced. Wayne says although the gun was found on his tour bus during that incident, it was registered to his manager and was in a bag near the rapper.

Remember all that root canal drama that kept postponing his sentence? Let's hope he kept up his dental hygiene while in the slammer.

The rapper - currently serving a year in prison on weapons charges - has a website created by his friends entitled Weezy Thanx You, which publishes letters Wayne writes in prison.

After three court delays, Lil' Wayne aka Dwayne Carter is finally heading to jail for one year. The rapper was sentenced this morning in New York for a gun conviction.

Get this...even though his eight root canals have already been taken care of, Wayne did ask for special medical attention for his dental issues while he serves his time. The boys got to keep his grill in check!

Weezy won't be out of the courtroom for long. On March 30, he'll appear before the judge again for felony drug possession and weapons charges stemming from an incident in Yuma County, Arizona.

All the court drama doesn't seem to be affecting the rapper though - during Jay-Z's sold out Madison Square Garden concert last night, Wayne shocked the crowd by going onstage with Young Jeezy to perform the song I'm Goin In. Talk about rubbing it in the court's face!

As we previously reported, Wayne's initial court appearance was delayed due to emergency dental surgery. And yesterday, his scheduled court date was postponed yet again because of a courthouse fire. The fire damage was apparently so severe that the courts decided to postpone the hearing until Monday.

So what's the deal with this fire? The New York City Fire Department says that the cause was faulty electrical wiring.

If the 27-year-old actually appears before the judge on Monday, barring a hurricane or a tornado, he is expected to begin his 1-year sentence for a gun charge.

The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, will finally appear before the judge in New York today to plead guilty to attempted gun possession. After the plea, he's expected to turn himself in to begin his 1-year jail sentence.

It was just last month when the Cash Money mega-star's lawyer delayed the rapper's court date due to dental surgery. We thought that grill of his was indestructible! But eight root canals later...guess not.

Since then, there have been several more arrests for gun possession and felony possession of drugs in Idaho and Arizona. Lil Wayne's Arizona trial is scheduled to begin March 30.

As for how the rapper will be treated in jail, a New York corrections officer told MTV News:

"He'll be housed with inmates who are classified in his category, and he'll be able to be a regular inmate. He'll be able to watch television, go into the day room and congregate with people of his classification. He'll have no preferable treatment at all. He'll be treated like a regular inmate."

But will he get extra time to brush and floss? That's what we want to know!

Lil Wayne (nee Dwayne Carter) pleaded guilty today to attempted criminal possession of a weapon and he will serve a year in prison. The rapper agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors and he will be sentenced at New York State Supreme Court in February.

Prosecutors say police pulled over Lil Wayne's tour bus on July 22, 2007 after allegedly smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle, and officers then found Wayne to be in possession of a weapon.

The rapper would have faced more serious gun possession charges if the case had gone to trial, as well as a maximum 15-year prison sentence, a spokeswoman at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said.
