I know of what I speak, because I currently AM on probation for the next 2 yrs for a DUI offense. And if I were to break the terms of my probation, the odds of the judge calling me into court, patiently waiting an hour for me to show up late, then giving me an extra yr to get it done (and telling me that he's pulling for me) are pretty effin' slim. Speculation? No, the judge told me so himself - "..don't break the terms of this probation, or I WILL put you in jail."

Of course, this is North Carolina, not L.A., and I'm not rich & famous. I'm just sayin'....

If she thinks the law doesn’t apply to her, she’s in for a rude awakening. All it takes is one person making a credible report about her violating her probation and she will be going through withdrawal in jail. One person. That person might even be her father.

It seems very political and insider. Judges supposedly cater to lawyers because lawyers can influence who gets on the bench. But, with the internet that is changing. People can rate their judges and hold judges accountable. Take back your courts, people. The courts are paid for by taxpayers and it's everyone's constitutional right to have fair and impartial access to the courts. The judicial system seems very clubby and needs to serve the people.

Maybe so. It seemed like that Hilton judge gave the correct punishment but he seemed overly harsh by comparison to the other puppet judges. Also great about that Hilton judge is that he didn't care what the gossip sites said and kept the courtroom a separate and dignified place.

I had a very distant relative that was a Superior Ct. judge in the state I live in. He was caught drinking and driving, and get this, around the time shortly after serving that day. His excuse was that he drank immediately after he was done for the day. He was sent before a Judicial review board and was basically warned, given the most minor of hand slaps, and would only get hammered if the same thing happened again. I think he was order to attend a DUI group of some sort, but nothing else. Mind you, this was about 20 years ago. What I learned from this is that it is very, very difficult to censure a judge. Truthfully, the guy was sort of a nutjob lush and I rarely had to deal with him much, as he was a distant relative in a different city. He died a couple of years from cirrhosis and no, I didn't attend the funeral. Just try to question a judge and see where that goes. Now what is that saying about absolute power again? I haven't thought about this for a long time, but remember it now.

It is hard to censure a judge and hard to censure a lawyer and hard to censure a doctor because each group protects its own and operates out of the public eye.

The public needs to get more involved in holding judges, lawyers, doctors, etc accountable. It affects your life everyday. These are not rich people's concerns. When professions like these feel there is nobody watching or holding them accountable, they act more recklessly and with favoritism to those with money and power.

The internet gives back awesome power to people. A good place to start is to rate your doctors, rate your judges, rate your lawyers. Keep the public dialogue going.

Simply shining sunlight on behavior keeps people honest. Look at how swift and just regulatory agencies are when a story is in the media and the public is watching.

In most places, judges are regarded as the king or queen of their particular hill. My good buddy (and my lawyer, if ever I needed one) is a practicing lawyer and has said to me that even if you absolutely know a judge dropped the ball or did something wrong, one of the few recourses is to appeal the decision, or contact a review board. And these review boards are very protective of their brethren and tend to look down their noses at 'pesky subordinate lawyers'. Taking on a judge is akin to trying to kill a great white shark deep underwater, while naked and without scuba gear and unarmed. Guess who usually wins? My friend pissed off a crappy judge and basically got reamed for his trouble. He was pissed, but there wasn't much he could do about it, except to never take a case with that judge again. They protect their own, no doubt.

The thing was that no one, not even regular people in CA, had to go to jail under such circumstances.

Also,compared to Lohan's two DUI's or Nicole's driving against traffic on the freeway while on drugs, she shoud never have gone to jail.

It's water under the bridge now but I do think that Paris Hilton was treated unfairly ,especially compared to other celebrities.

In the Hilton case, the Disrict Attorney also tried to make political hay out of being tough on her - until it was revealed that his own wife had a bench warrant out for her arrest in Santa Monica traffic court.

Oh, forgot to add that the DA's wife got off with just paying a $300 fine in Santa Monica.

This is not the first time she's violated probation, but as usual she got away with it.

In reality, the first time you violate probation, you would get a severe warning and could be back in jail, the second time, you'd be back in jail. This is Lindsay's third time violating probation and they let her get away with it.

Trust me, even if she violated it again, they would not put her in jail. This is clearly celebrity justice.

Problem with Lindsay is, her mother refuses to see that there is anything wrong with her daughter's behavior.
