THIS Thursday marks Lindsay Lohan's 23rd birthday and all signs point to the fact the wild child is finally growing up.

New work projects, a healthier lifestyle and a claim that the craziness of her early years is behind her means Lindsay could beat Britney as the official comeback queen of her generation - if she embraces her second chance.

"I feel like I want to get my career back in shape,'' Lohan says. "There are some shows that I'm producing that I'm really excited about, and I'm doing a movie in October. I've just been working every single day.''

Her most recent film, Labour Pains - about a young girl who fakes her own pregnancy - will bereleased in Australia later this year.

But the movie that could re-establish Lohan as a serious actor is The Other Side, a modern-day fairy tale in which Lohan plays the female lead.

Cast next to some heavyweight Hollywood talent - including Woody Harrelson and Giovanni Ribisi - Lohan is taking the opportunity seriously.

With filming of her new movie about to start, Lohan swears those days are long gone. Where once she seemed more at home in rehab than on set of a movie, now she says she's more likely to be found at home on her couch.

"I watch a lot of TV,'' she says. "I'm not out every night. When I'm working I don't go out.''

Indeed, it seems that, despite her reputation, Hollywood is giving the star known as Lilo a fair go.

"Everything is falling into place and moving along and feeling really good,'' she says.

"I've been through a lot, but I was 19 or 20 when everything happened. Now, I'm ready to work and I'm responsible. I've learned from my mistakes.

"I think that my life is different now and it's changed and I'm growing up and it was time to grow up. I'm just a different person now.''

No one could say that Lohan isn't throwing her energies in the right direction. Next year, she'll be putting her singing talents back to work in the film musical Dare To Love Me.

She will also appear in four episodes of Ugly Betty, and recent reports have connected her to a new reality TV show with Ryan Seacrest.

Appropriately, the series will revolve around giving people a second chance. So far, it looks like she's embraced hers.

She even upped her karma by donating some proceeds from her fashion line, 6126, to ovarian cancer research.

Just as Lohan's professional life is being given some much-needed resuscitation, her personal life seems to be back on track, too. Even the drama of her on-off relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson has died down.

"Samantha and I are friends,'' she says. "We talk. I'm not looking to be with anyone right now. It gets too distracting from everything that I need to focus on. I really care about Samantha and we'll see what happens.''

But despite all her hard work it's clear that Lohan will struggle to avoid the controversy that seems to follow her. Previous brushes with the law include drink-driving and cocaine possession.

Just three weeks ago, she was at the centre of a police inquiry when $500,000 worth of jewellery went missing after a magazine photo shoot. Lohan denied any wrongdoing and the magazine backed her.

It might just be a case of ``watch this space'' for now, but it's clear that Lohan just wants a chance to try.

"People have their own opinions and they're entitled to it. I don't care what they say. I don't care because I know the truth.''

Enjoying a little time with her younger brother, Lindsay Lohan shopped the day away in Beverly Hills, California on Friday (June 26).

Showing her little bro some love with a warm embrace, the duo and a gal pal roamed around the shops - surely searching for just the right oufit for what's going to be a big weekend.

As previously reported, Miss Lohan is set to fly off to Las Vegas for a pre-birthday bash being held tomorrow.

Although her actual birthday isn't until July 2nd, Miss Lohan's getting an early start with a poolside bash at Wet Republic, with music by DJ Steve Aoki and a launch party for Lindsay's Sevin Nyne tanning mist.
