A quick look at news articles on the case would be more than enough to realize this. It was an unwinnable suit filed out of anger. It is the reason so few libel and slander suits are brought by celebrities in the US compared to what you would think. You have to nail the originator and you have to prove it was with malicious intent. Only when one has an airtight case such as Carol Burnett vs. National Enquirer 1981 case did (a ton of witnesses and an extremely hateful article that crossed a very personal threshold) do you win. In Ronson's case the story being truthful or false was never considered. That did not matter in the case. The case was solely about if it fit guidelines for that type of suit. I don't believe anyone with a brain bought the story.
