Avatar Only Pulls $3.5 Million At Midnight Screenings
Posted on Sat Dec 19, 2009 09:55 AM PDT
Despite all the hype, James Cameron's Avatar isn't off to a fantastic start at the box office.
The CGI heavy action flick only grossed $3.54 million from it's midnight shows, according to 20th Century Fox. While that seems like a lot, remember...this movie cost over $300 million to make!
Just for comparison, The Twilight Saga: New Moon pulled $26.3 million for it's midnight opening, and while that amount was record breaking, we're thinking James and the folks at Fox are a little disappointed about the first round of numbers. Maybe this weekend will be a different story?
How much do you think it will make opening weekend?

WHO CARES ABOUT THIS HYPE
haha thats what these morons get 300 million for a movie what a freakin joke i can think of a million other things that money could have been used for
well im goin after xmas to see this and sherlock holmes. but ya gonna get small numbers since its crimbo and most money is goin on gifts food etc
You know the thing is with this movie, it's really not for everyone. I can see people who love special effects and computer generated effects and advancements be eager to see it, but it doesn't appeal that much to me. I'm sure it's a fantastic movie though.
I might see it eventually, but it's not a must on my list. Sherlock Holmes on the other hand, looks great, has great actors in it and has something for everyone.
I PREDICT THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE A MAJOR BOMB....IT'S WAY TOO WEIRD FOR THE CHRISTMAS CROWD...TO COMPLICATED....AND A BIT CHEESY LOOKING....IMAGINE WHAT 300 MILLION COULD HAVE DONE FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE SUFFERING.....F'ING STUPID..THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY I HATE HOLLYWOOD!!!
i saw this movie tonight, and it was fantastic.. one of the most amazing movie i've ever seen ..seriously . Very interesing..
i saw the movie yesterday evening...it was GREAT, FANTASTIC, NO WORDS...was the best movie, unbeliveble effects
This is how Titanic started out. Slow to start and then it really took off.
I havent seen the movie but just after trailer can say that it izz an alien propaganda prepearing people to alien and their hybrids (alien@human mix) invasion of Earth.
They ARE NOT our friends! All of them will be hunted and killed. All of them.
Fack you ETs, spirits, aliens, fack you all
It looks like sci-fi-animated-digital crap.
ALL TAKE MY WOMAN TO NICE DINNER AFTER SHOPPING THIS MOVIE SUCKZ
I had a feeling this movie was going to bomb out.
For me it just seems too boring and complicated like they gave him a bit too much money to spend.
money doesn't always buy you THAT GREAT FINAL CUT ''
/ REAL TALENT WHEN IT COMES TO [REAL] ARTISTIC CINEMA '
THISN MOVIE SUCKZ I JUST SAW IT
Avatar will make lots of money. People like love movies, even if it's a Vampire.
If you like the idea of cheering to these blue critters killing marines and watching our heros dying painful deaths you will enjoy this movie.
I saw this movie Friday night and it was great! I very rarely go to the movies, I prefer to Netflix and watch at home, but this movie was well worth going to see in the theatre.
And as for 4:04 comment, the story isn't about "killing marines", it's about trying to protect what is yours and saving your people.
I give it 2 thumbs up.
well i saw this movie the other night while its good and fantastic, but theres nothin more to it but the splicing of actual and animation...
James cameron should realize that money cant buy everything..its too far rom his Titanic..the drama and crying is sooo cheesy and so eeeww... cameron thinks he can pull people by playing the drama thing...its not working here....
Maybe people can't stand the hypocrisy of Hollywood lecturing to the public how bad evil America is and the big corporations, while they spend 300 million for a fcken movie, the GDP of a small country.
Thos movie is another left wing crapfeist, shit on America, the military, Corporations......
It's grossed 100 million in it's first weekend, so that's one third of the production budget taken care of. It could change the way movies are made from now on, haven't seen it yet, but will tonight, can't wait, everyone at work reckons it's the movie of the year and is so much better than District 9 which was awesome in itself.
