The Hunger Games Takes A Huge Bite Out Of The Weekend Box Office

Mar 26, 2012 08:15 AM

the_hunger_games_jennifer_lawrence_elizabeth_banks.jpgThe Hunger Games had the third highest box office opening of all time, thanks to $155 million worth of domestic ticket sales and a whopping $214.3 million worldwide.

The Hunger Games takes the number three spot behind 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, which holds the record for best debut with $169.2 million and The Dark Knight, which earned $158.4 in the summer of 2008.

Lionsgate president of marketing Tim Palen, whose team was behind the ad campaigns for the flick, told The Hollywood Reporter, "It was the perfect storm. Having the first film in a franchise to be so gigantic is amazing. We had a great book and a great director in Gary Ross."
