When Owen is in a relationship, it appears that he is better able to control his substance abuse; at least for a time, anyway (trading one addiction for another?) His romantic relationships always made the gossip columns; his hard drug-use, not so much (before the August 26th incident, of course). I think most people WERE surprised by the hard-drug allegiations. It's strange that he was seen falling-down drunk twice in Santa Monica in the middle of October of this year and, by the end of the same month, he's off to New York, returning to LA with yet another girlfriend. Definitely a set-up - probably by his brothers/family. Maybe not so much an attempt to salvage Owen's public image; perhaps more of a strategy to save/prolong Owen's life...

I don't know that I completely agree with Owen Needs More Therapy above - he and Sheryl Crow apparently almost heroin od-ed together, and Kate was a notorious pot head who is an expert at hiding what she's doing, so I think it really depends on the relationship. If one of them gets back into drugs, and the other one follows, this will only get worse. Le doesn't seem to have her act completely together, with all the negative press she's been getting it is clear she did and said a lot of things she now wishes she hadn't. If those things could lead to more trouble for Owen, this might get really bad.
