Apple visionary Steve Jobs died Wednesday at age 56.

The co-founder transformed the way we see technology today with the introduction of the iMac, iPod and iPhone.

Jobs had been battling a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Apple's board of directors said in a statement:

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Jobs beat a form of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and had a liver transplant in 2009. Then on August 24, 2011, he stepped down as Apple's chief executive, stating in his resignation letter, "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

Jobs co-founded Apple in 1976 with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak. They are said to have introduced the world to the first personal computer, the Apple II.

After being ousted from the company in 1984 at age 30, he founded NeXT computers. He was brought back to Apple in 1996 when the company bough NeXT and became the CEO in 1997.

Apple posted a picture of Jobs on their home page Wednesday afternoon, along with the text:

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jobs' family and friends.
