Russell Brand Stirring Up Trouble In The UK
Posted on Sat Nov 1, 2008 04:24 PM PDT
Here in the US, most of us just think of Russell Brand as a shaggy-haired comedian who has a penchant for wearing tight pants and eyeliner. However, across the pond it looks like Brand is becoming famous for more serious things - like causing a huge disruption within the BBC as well as the general public.
Just two weeks ago, Brand and fellow radio personality Jonathan Ross prank called Andrew Sachs, and left messages on the 78-year-old actor's voice mail, claiming that Brand had slept with Sachs' granddaughter Georgina.
At that point, Variety reports that only two people complained, so no one imagined the drama that would ensue 8 days later. After a UK paper published an article about Brand's lewd prank calls, hundreds of people (including British Prime Minister Gordon Brown) complained, and as a result Brand and Ross were suspended from their positions at the BBC. Shortly after that, Brand and BBC Radio 2 exec Lesley Douglas resigned, and now it looks like there might be additional resignations as Variety calls this "the biggest crisis to hit the world's most famous pubcaster" in nearly five years.
What do you think about Russell's prank calls? Is it really such a big deal?

All right people, if you're gonna talk shit, get it right. He didn't 'claim' to have slept with the guy's granddaughter - he did sleep with her, she adimitted to it.
Anyways, people only complained after they read about it, which doesn't reall make any sense - if they weren't even listening to the show why should they feel offended? it's all so stupid. Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross and Ricky Gervais are the funniest 'comedians' around, and the fact you americans only know of Brand for his hair and eyeliner shows how stupid and VAIN your nation is! pretty sad! oh, ignorance...
You don't call up somebody's grandfather and tell him that, especially somebody as beloved as "Manuel" from Fawlty Towers. I'm glad he got in trouble, and Jonathan Ross is another jackass. The BBC is like our public television, paid for by the viewing public, not like an idiotic American network station. Good riddance to both of them.
@Anonymous: Since when not knowing Russell Brand makes a nation ignorant and vain?? I'm afraid that you're the one who's really vain here.
I've seen his profile on the fitness & celebrity dating club ^^^^^^FitnessKiss. C O M^^ ^^^^ for hot singles to hook up for Hot Love and Sexy Dating.
McCain Palin 08!
The two complaints they did receive the night of the broadcast were for Ross's expletive that wasn't beeped. The media went on a frenzy regarding the prank call and encouraged peeps to call in a complain. By the way Sachs was supposed to be home to be interviewed, wasn't, hence the message leaving. The whole thing is a travesty. So many jobs lost, especially this time of year.
He's not "becoming famous" he was famous in the UK long before that film
He can stay in the UK then. He's not welcome in the US.
It was a daft thing that got out of hand. It wasn't a prank call but a phone interview that didn't take place and while Russell was doing a mock interview with the answerphone, Jonathan Ross yelled out something crude about his granddaughter. Russell got swept into it but as the show was pre-recorded there was no excuse so Russell and the station head had to go
He folded like a pussy. "I'm so sorry boo hoo!". That's what you get for hiring a junkie.
Ricki Gervais is way funnier than Ross and Brand by the way. Any how I listened to the interview, storm in a tea cup if you ask me. The question is why did the studio braodcast it, it wasn't live, executives must've listened to it and said " no worries, lets play it" they're the ones that should quit, not Ross or Brand.
The Mtv Host Russel Brand who tried to turn the MTV awards show into an angry politcal rally , Is in trouble again ?
I heard clips of Ross & Brand. It was the saddest thing I've ever heard. It was painful to listen to what these two think comedy is, and what the Brits think is funny these days.
Russell was the funniest thing on British telly and radio. The BBC is a sadder place without him. Love him dearly. x
It's not either Brand or Gervais – they work well together. See their LiveEarth interview on YouTube.
