You are mistaken. Go to your public library or look online. Before you shoot your mouth off learn about your topic. There is this book called DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition) and it lists all the types of mental illnesses and in fact there is more than one type of BIPOLAR DISORDER. The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II and cyclothymia based on the type and severity of mood episodes experienced.
And it takes a lot more than being eccentric or moody to be diagnosed BIPOLAR. I am PHD in PSYCHOLOGY. I went to school for 18 years so I know my job. I also have colleagues who have read the diagnostic report on Ms. Spears. Britney Spears has in fact been diagnosed with Type I BIPOLAR DISORDER and PANIC ANXIETY DISORDER. She is severely ill at this time and it is not uncommon for a person with Bipolar Disorder to get stabilized on their medications and work and function quite well in their lives but maintenance is necessary and in Britney Spears case the person who was providing her with the maintenance was doing it in an inappropriate manner. She has a very serious mental disorder. She has a conservatorship right now because she was not taking her medications properly and functioning in a rational manner. Until such time that she does so on her own without being forced to participate in her recovery she will have conservators. PERIOD! The law is on the side of the SPEARS family. They are looking out for Britney because she is not capable of looking out for herself.

The point is that there are people who "appear" to function normally, but cannot make healthy decisions and "need" someone to help them. A guardian/conservator when requested is usually done out of love and concern for the person. It is very rare that it is done out of spite. Mental illness is really that, the brain's function is impaired in an area. The brain is an organ just like any other. It too, is susceptible to illness, either genetic or due to an outside cause.

Thank you Dr. Paul. You explained that very well and I hope it sinks in to tomy Lee. My son is schizoaffective disorder, so I understand what you are saying very well. This is a long hard road, and it took us 15 years, just to get a correct diagnosis. I guess you have to live this to truly understand. There must be some type of half way measure where instead of one extreme ie conservatorship and the other extreme, complete freedom, a middle ground could be found. Could they not set up a Britney Spears Corporation and run it that way with a CEO and a Boardroom with MEETINGS WHERE BRIT COULD HAVE INPUT. The truth of her illness will likely come out one day and when it does hopefully it will help educate many about the various types of mental illness. Chemical imbalances happen to millions and many are left untreated or misdiagnosed. Do you have a doctor that might refer you to a psychiatrist because you seem to have some issues that might require treatment. You are angry at me for explaining to you what Bipolar Disorder is. We are on a blog in cyberspace. Why are you so angry young man? There are free mental health centers all over the USA. Kira, a permanent conservatorship goes on a yearly basis. It is reviewed and renewed if needed. It may not be for the rest of her life, but it is needed now. teekay I think I hate labels more than anything...because the mind is so much much much more then what we know...we have no right to go around putting labels on people and the mind is so complex, there is never ever 1 straight answer...its not that I don't believe in medication because I truly do if it is needed to stablize someone...but once they are stablized I feel a lot of the time, they will medicate these people, but will over-look the importance of being able to spiritually connect to yourself again...I really do believe that that connection to yourself -to your soul and in turn the connection to God, can solve and relieve a lot of this separation from self, or this 'out of touch' feeling.. I just hate labels and would rather have a more positive outlook...I am a firm believer in the power of the mind also...and the power it has to turn itself around...but I don't want to get yelled at for saying that, I just think that in this instance, there is hope. Temporary psychosis due to drug use is VERY real and most likely the reason for her spinning out...the behavior that most people on here would label a "manic" state, like her wigs, her driving at night, her fast-talking, ect,ect. can also be an indication of prolonged excessive drug use...she was taking plenty of meds on her own, i still believe the family probably thinks they are saving face by telling people she is ill, rather then saying what it was...which was a big drug binge that ended up with her being tempoarily "de-railed" so to speak...nothing permanent I don't believe...
