Wyclef Jean Raises More Than $2 Million, But Will All The Money Go To Haiti?

These pix really say it all - the Miami-based "Give On The Go" fundraising division of Red Fish Media has raised over $2 million in donations for Wyclef Jean's "Yele Haiti" foundation. (This is where you can text "Yele" to 501501 on your cell phone to make a contribution...)

Red Rish prez Matt McKenna says the following: "100% of the donations that are made are given directly to the charity and our goal is to raise $1 million per day for the sufferers of this catastrophe."

The Haitian-born Jean is in the earthquake-destroyed country himself "picking up dead bodies because the morgues ain't taking no more bodies," he says.

Jean's foundation has also come under scrutiny for taking the donated money and putting it back into the singer's own pocket, according to The Smoking Gun. Apparently, the Wyclef Jean Foundation - known now as the Yele Haiti Foundation - has been around for 12 years, but only filed its first tax returns in August 2009.

It seems that in the past, approximately $410,000 of foundation money has been paid back to Jean himself when, well, it shouldn't!

What does Wyclef have to say about all this? Watch the vid below to see for yourself!

Let's just hope everyone's donated money goes to the people who need it.

He doesn't have a very good track record
if you read some of the articles about him. If you are paying yourself to
put on a performance then you are really
cutting into the money. Before you donate you really should go online and
look up the organzations and what is
pledged. It isn't always as good as it
sounds. Just because someone says they
going to do something doesn't mean it
always gets done or it may take several
years. There are a lot of really good
organzations that are giving a big per
centage out of the money they donate.
I prefer to stick with them. If they
have been around for a long time, they
are usually good. Charity Navigator is
a good place to research it. If it's not listed then you probably should think again.

Too much of charity now is being
used for pr and personnel gain.
If you want to donate look up a
legimate fund that has been a-
round and has a low per centage
going back to the people running
it. It's easy to find out. See
what they have actually gotten
done.

“Hope for Haiti” will be hosted by the event’s main driving force, Clooney, in Los Angeles, Wyclef Jean in New York City and CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Haiti.

“Hope for Haiti”

All proceeds will be split evenly among five relief organisations currently operating in Haiti: Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF and Yele Haiti Foundation.

====================================
do you how much money these make, for 911 and Katrina they brought in over 100 million....... so his Yele Haiti foundation will be getting a chunk of that money.......

sorry but unless they take Wyclef foundation out I wouldn't donate and make sure my friends and family don't donate to this thing and instead donate directly to Red Cross or Doctors without Boarders or Clinton/Bush Haiti foundation.

I agree with Sam

YES AND REMEMBER GEORGE CLOONEY'S TELETHON THE MONEY PROBLEMS HE HAD..TOO
So go ahead and waste your money finding
out that Katrina people were left in their trailers after the government gave
them 1 billion dollars in aid for what..
And finding out that it would be more worth while to transport tractors and
dump trucks to dig out the streets and
help the people...send supplies not cash. It does nothing.. SO BE IT.. KATRINA ALL OVER AGAIN...TAKE THE MONEY
AND RUN..WHYCLEF..go ahead and say it
we have to pay the actors for coming on
the show and expenses..that should come
from your own pocket or the studio..

Women and merchandise there isn't cheap. Business as usual in Ganster land.

If Clooney had any real man.. he'd get on a plane with his rich pals and help dig those people out. Craven-a$$Coward! Doctors are afraid and abandoning injured people at night to hide from the maurauding monsters that live there.

I am afraid that Sam is correct. People should always be careful who they give their money to. Don't give just because some "Movie Star" ask you to. Give out of your heart.

I can not stand this guy. Notice his buddies Angie jo and brad didn't give him their Millon bucks. Isn't Angie on the board of his foundation?

I don't trust this guy after watching this. I don't trust anyone who refers to himself in the 3rd person.

HOWEVER, facts are facts - the spotlight IS on him, so I really believe that he will have no choice but to really spend the money on Haiti, so I did text to that number.

Also, the audit of the charity revealed that 69% of money IS spent on charity directly, and that is a very high percentage - the best-run charity do not surpass 75%. PLUS, I will give him props for donating $1 from his own money. I still don't like this dude, but this is NOT ABOUT HIM.

X17 Poll

What went wrong on The X Factor today with Britney Spears?

Britney definitely had another meltdown. This is proof she's not ready to step back into the spotlight!
I think Britney may have overreacted to a bad audition, but it will be entertaining to watch later!
I think Simon Cowell planned this all along. Brit probably even rehearsed it!
