LOS ANGELES, California (X17online) -Opening statements have begun in Britney's driving without a license trial inside a Van Nuys, California courtroom.

Her attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, came out firing, saying that Spears had actually tried to get a California driver's license on April 4th, 2007.

He also claims that Spears considers herself a resident of Louisiana, where she's reportedly building a new house, and that is why she kept her driver's license issued from that state.

After opening statements, the first witness called was an investigator from the DMV who was questioned about the pop star's driving record.

Spears' father Jaime is expected to be in court this afternoon, but it's unclear whether he'll take the stand.
