'Fast & Furious' Opens Big

FastFurious200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - In the largest weekend opening since "The Dark Knight," the latest installment of the "Fast & Furious" franchise hauled in an estimated $72.5 million dollars in its opening weekend.

The film was Universal's best opening film ever, as well as the best ever opening for a film in April.

DreamWorks animated "Monsters Vs. Aliens" dropped to second place, earning a still respectable $33.5 million. "The Haunting in Connecticut" finished third with an estimated $9.5 million in ticket sales.

Rounding out the top five are "Knowing" and "I Love You Man" with $8.1 and $7.8 million in ticket sales respectively.

In all this was a huge weekend for Hollywood, with ticket sales up an astronomical 80 percent over the same period last year.
