Miley's Hat Stirs Controversy
Posted on Wed Jun 3, 2009 08:05 AM PDT

MileyJCHat200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - Miley Cyrus is sparking a new round of controversy, this time over her choice of head wear.

The Disney darling was spotted wearing a pink baseball cap with "Jesus Christ" written in a Coca-Cola style script across the front.

While Miley has made no secret of her strong belief in Christianity, some Christians say the hat is in bad taste and it "commercializes religion."

"It's tacky and disrespectful," a commenter told X17online.

But others don't see anything wrong with Miley's hat. "We have freedom to express ourselves, even if Hollywood doesn't agree," said one Miley fan.

I think it is wonderful!!! Celebs these days have no problem "advertising" for a multiple of clothing brands, tacky prases, etc. So why not advertise your beleifs in religion? I commend Miley for wearing her hat knowing she would receive the heat from those nonbeleivers. Way to go Miley!!!!

Posted by: andrea chandler

i like it i think it express miley really well i know her personaly and i have to say if she wants to wear a hat that says jesus christ let her shes not hurting anyone its a free country or at least that what its supposed to be so let her wear whatever she wants and go on with ur lives its none of ur bis what she buys and wears i love the hat and think its another way of her expressing her love for jesus he rox my sox and i love her for standing up for herself like that you go girl ur sis in christ andrea God bless forever and always

Posted by: Erich

But will she live it?.....

Posted by: Barbara Daugherty

If she was holding hands with a girl...like Adam Lambert was holding hands with a guy...It wouldn't be disrespectful now would it. Go for it Miley!

So, does Christian Contemporary music commercialize Christianity? Do all of the other t-shirts, hats, car stickers, etc. commercialize it? Give me a break! The message and the man are the same whether it's written in block letters, fancy 'Coca-Cola' script, or chiseled in stone.

Leave the girl alone. This is such a non-story.

Posted by: Anonymous

omg! she used the coca cola font in vain! burn her for a witch!

Posted by: Anonymous

This is no different than any of the hundreds of "Logo'd" hats available everywhere that take a play on Corporate I.D.'s to carry a modern culture spin of the Christian Message. I own a "God Squad" hat (Geek Squad Logo), and love that it makes people take a second look. Way to go Miley! Keep Strong!

Some of us who cherish the name "Jesus Christ" (not because of who we are BUT because of who He is) are really saddened when HIS name is used as a slang, curse. Hollywood goes too far for ME with the slang jesus christ. He was GOD WHO CAME FROM HEAVEN TO DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH FOR ALL OF US SO WE COULD LIVE FOREVER IN HIS FATHERS HOUSE. You're not going to get knocked over the head if you don't believe. The lovely thing about Jesus, you're given a choice. Some choose to use HIS lovely name in a disgraceful way! From my heart.

Posted by: Monica

I think this is lame. I am a Christian and don't think that its inappropriate for Miley to wear this hat. How many
"Christian" stores offer apparel that copies secular clothing lines? TONS!! In fact that is all they do these days, like us Christians cannot come up w/cool logos of our own. But that's what's out there and that is what we buy. Get over it. Not a big deal. I don't think Jesus wants us fighting over this insignificant issue. How about the great commission and spread the gospel instead.

Posted by: Lisa M. Montgomery

Don't we have freedom of speech in this country still? I thought so. She can wear whatever she darn well pleases. God bless America.

Posted by: Tom

Better then saying Coon Hunters Do It Right!!!! Go Miley!

Posted by: Anonymous

Would the media and all of you bigots be happy if it said "Allah Ahkbah" You people sicken me.
GOD BLESS YOU MILEY!!

Posted by: Anonymous

Finally a young pop star who believes and isn't afraid to show it! Miley you rock!

Posted by: Linda

I expected a negative feed back. I don't know the purpose of Miley wearing her hat. My comment was about the use of the name of jesus christ as a slang or curse, same as God D_ _. The world didn't accept Jesus when he walked on this earth so I don't expect the world will respect a Christian view. Why do people get so upset when someone defends Christ or the Bible?

Posted by: jackie crane

it must of been a left winger who said that it was tacky. i don't see anthing wrong with it. next the aclu will get on the band wagon.and bring a law suit against her for wearing the hat out in public.i'm glad she is wearing it. you go girl

Posted by: Anonymous

tacky and disrespectful???? have you ever seen a crucifix?

Posted by: Anonymous

I love how liberals claim to be tolerant. Then they show their hate mongering and rabid bigotry for Chrisians and anyone else that does not fit their twisted world view. They can keep their hatred, and their vitriol. This is still a free country. So get over it rabid hate mongering liberals. :)

Posted by: Anonymous

What's the difference if she wears a hat, or she wears a T-shirt w/something religious on it. I think this is being way too picky, come on!

Posted by: Tori

Yeah for Miley,if she's wearing the hat to promote Jesus Christ is a good light that's great. It she isn't then she better look out because God doesn't take kindly to anyone making fun of his son.

Posted by: Michelle inTexas

Good grief! Those of us who love Jesus Christ should THANK Miley for being proud to show she's a beliver! And this Coca-Cola style "Jesus Christ" is NOT new! It was popular back in the 70's. I remember going to the Christian bookstore in Santa Fe, NM as a kid and buying a red poster with white lettering just like Miley's hat. Good for you, Miley!!

Posted by: Anonymous

SLOW NEWS DAY I GUESS!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

i love it! my mom owns the tshirt :)
btw tho, its really stupid (lack of intelligence...)to talk about "liberals" being the brunt of all evil. the terms "liberal and conservative" have nothing to do with believing in God or not. I'm somewhat liberal POLITICALLY (which is how the term is used...) but follow God's teaching.

Posted by: Lola Bee

I love the hat , I want one too ! :) Jesus Christ RULES !!!!!!!!

Posted by: R.C.Fishburn Sr.

I think it is false pride and arrogance that rules the belief that you can serve the wicked one and his lies POLITICALLY and then claim to be ruled by the Father and Son. Love the Lord,Love the hat! Matt. 25-12

Posted by: Kate

As a mom of 2 little girls and a Christ-follower, I love that there is someone in the public eye (and on Disney Channel) who isn't ashamed to wear the name. I'm proud of her. Miley, don't let the critics get you down. There are a lot of believers out here, just not enough in the media I guess.

Posted by: Benzie

You HATERS should be blaming the ones who made the cap. Miley just bought it and worn it to show her preference.
Now, if htis cap wasn't made and sold to public, will there be a "Jesus Christ" cap for Miley to wear???
Stop criticizing Miley, she is a normal 16 yrs old and doing EXCELLENT!!!

Posted by: Pat

Good for her. It take someone strong and confident which she is to wear her faith and her stock has risen in my book... I am so sick of people who want to trash Christians.... Hollywood is souless and this girl has a good upbringing...Hollywood hypocrites can go to Hell, Miley Cyrus can wear and say whatever she wants.

Posted by: Pat

Hello Hollywood maybe it is not in your scripts out here in Wacko Land but it is called Freedom Of Speech, Freedom of expression. you know that thing called Rights that we still have until Obama the Socialist tries to take that away... Express yourself Miley this is a Christian Nation !!!! Maybe someone can call Oshamalam of a President we have and inform him we are a Christian Nation............

Posted by: Anonymous

That is important because....?

Posted by: Tracie

Wearing "Jesus Christ" on a hat is not slang or cursing or showing disgrace in any way, shape, or form. The "purpose" is to express, in a wonderful way, your beliefs and to tell people you are a Christian. To Linda, no one is angry and I believe most comments are defending Christ and the Bible. This is just one of many ways to show our love of Christ.

Posted by: Greg

Matthew 19:24 says, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." To anyone fretting about Obama and his "socialist" agenda, didn't Jesus advocate sharing the wealth, or was that "love thy neighbor as thyself" line just eloquent PR? Oh, and if socialism rankles you so, please immediately refrain from the following: driving on highways, relying on law enforcement and the military, sending your children to public schools, and using Medicare and Medicaid--unless, of course, you don't care about being a hypocrite. When did fiscal conservatism and Christianity become so aligned? Self-identifying as a Christian and living per the principles espoused by Christ are, all too often, two very different things. And as far as the hat? It's aesthetically tacky in my opinion (especially if the typeface is indeed meant to resemble that of Coca-Cola), but then again, it's just a freaking hat.

Posted by: Anonymous

Although I am not a christian, I see no problem with the young lady wearing a hat reflecting her beliefs, this is america after all.

Posted by: Mike

Awesome hat ! You go Girl !!!!!

Posted by: TJ

Miley, I love you my daughter loves you and I truly believe that you are one of the good ones, God Bless you and continue to belief in God and expressing your feelings towards him. Some people just can't make up their minds.

Posted by: Krista

there is nothing different in her wearing that hat than everyone else wearing WWJD stuff or fish shirts. Our Church has shirts for our kids group and shirts for the Church. And so what if it commericalizes the Church, maybe we need more of that then condom commericals

Posted by: TJ

Miley, I love you my daughter loves you and I truly believe that you are one of the good ones, God Bless you and continue to believe in God and expressing your feelings towards him. Some people just can't make up their minds and you can only make some of the people happy some of the time and never all the time. I'm proud to call you one of my daughter's role model.

Posted by: Amy

As a Christian & someone eager to see more young people in hollywood/disney being good examples, I think the christians that are upset need to GET OVER IT... We need more young people like Miley to be proud of their beliefs and be examples for our kids. The world has no problem advertising for the bad things our world has to offer, it's nice to see a young person, "advertising" for God.

Posted by: Alfreda

I think that it's WONDERFUL that she has, in a quiet way, brought the name of Jesus out in places where it's normally only used as a curse word. I, too, am a Christian and I believe that to proudly wear the name of Jesus is a badge of honor. In an age where people in America are being persecuted for having Bible studies in their homes, where pastors are being told that they can't preach the Bible (BTW--homosexuality IS a sin), and where all perversions are refered to as "alternative livestyles" it's refreshing to see a young woman that's not intimidated by a morally depraved society.

Posted by: Rev. Tim

For years the secular world has used the sacred symbol of the cross as a costume jewelry piece; what's wrong with identifying Miley's faith with a popular beverage font?

Fair is fair, until it comes to Common Sense and Christianity!

Posted by: MPS

You Go Girl!!! And to the one who commented about socialism and Jesus Christ... Remember that we are to give to the poor at our own free will and choice. Socialism takes away freedom in giving my weath to whomever I choose and I choose to give to things other than goverment sponsored murder in the form of abortion and other such silly and evil government run programs.
You see, I give to charity without being forced by a socialist government!!! You should try it!! It's called following Jesus Christ

BTW, check your facts on socialism and opperssive society. I am paying for all kinds of auto bailouts and othet BS that never works. At least if I give directly to the poor ....of my own free will and choice.... I know that I am glorifying My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, not a Hollywood President and a corrupt covernment.

Miley, this is still America! Wear your Jesus Christy Hat Proudly!!!

Posted by: fatjoey

get over it and forgive her like good jesus freaks...errr christians do!

Posted by: fatjoey

it's risky! beware a muslim with a knife!

Posted by: Aaron

She sure didnt have it on at the MTV movie awards while she cheered on Eminem, who basically flushes bibles down the toilet on a daily basis.

Posted by: FATJOEY

think she will go to HELL? OR JUST PURGATORY?

Posted by: Linda

This is to Tracie, I think we are on the same page here. I NEVER said anything negative about Miley wearing her JC hat. What I said, "I'M TIRED OF THE HOLLYWOOD CROWD SAYING THE NAME JC AS A SLANG/CURSE". I hear people at work say it all the time. It is worse than saying god dam (forgive me). Don't you think that the name of JC is the most precious name on earth? Hollywood needs to find a new word. I'm 60 yrs old. The 1st time I heard JC used as a slang was in the movie "The Graduate", I walked out! George Washington said it best in a speech, "I pray that everyone in the world would get to know Jesus" To ALL THAT READS THIS: If you don't know JC, Give Him the chance to be in your life...... you'll never be the same! Read the book: "Left Behind" ... you may see the times we are living in.

Posted by: GOGO

"Jesus Chrrrrrist!!! Give us a break! Here you are expressing yourself by complaining about an innocent fellow American teenager who is simply exercising her right to express herself through a medium that is solidly founded, supported and encouraged by Americans! But then again it is such unreasonable negative nut case comments that that help reinforce support for her decision. So as for Miley, You Go, you precious red-blooded American Girl! And as for you hypocrites with too much time on your hands............. do us all a favor and "Just Go"!

Posted by: cabinessence

Good for Miley! There is a free speech double standard in the US, especially in Hollywood. No one blinks an eye (in Hollywood) when Adam Lambert is holding a guy's hand, when amoral movies are produced and anything/everything ungodly is not only tolerated but preferable/encouraged. Miley Cyrus is braver than anyone in H-wood for wearing this because she knows that she will immediately be chastised but she does it anyway. (Better than folks like Jennifer Aniston or Julia Roberts trashing Republicans and George W. Bush....these two are cowardly examples of trying their best to fit in so they will be liked and get acting jobs....it's as pathetic as being in high school and all the drama of trying to fit in and belong). YOU GO, MILEY!!!! FREE SPEECH! FREE SPEECH! FREE SPEECH (even when the Dems and Hollywood don't like it!!) :) :)

Posted by: fatjoey

i don't think jesus would mind? sounds like he was very very forgiving?

Posted by: Mama2

Back off of Miley! She is a BLESSING!!! If everyone else would stand up for what they believe in this world would be a better place.

Posted by: Aaron

If she has accepted Christ as her saviour I dont believe she will go to hell, but I also dont believe she is setting a very Christ-like example by joyfully supporting one of the most vile, morally deficient events in Hollywood. You can't be luke-warm.

Posted by: Anonymous

It's no wonder sheep need a shepherd, otherwise they're all bumping into each other, trying to eat the same blades of grass, pooping in each others faces, running if the wind blows, drowning if it rains and falling over because they just can't keep their balance. Impressive. Just follow the shepherd and MAYBE you can stay out of trouble.

Posted by: nick

way to go miley! I hate liberals!

Posted by: ironic

People are funny. They slam Miley for setting a bad example for our kids as a role model, but when she tries to set a good example, they want to nitpick on something as silly as expressing her belief because it's too commercial? Seriously?

Posted by: Don

Way to go!! If someone's offended, then they can go do their own thing.

Posted by: Chuck

Way to go Miley. You are in a position to impact a lot of teens. Many look up to you and want to be like you. So letting them know you have faith in Jesus Christ is great. So many public figures that claim they are christians only mention god when in public. A god can be anything so when you are specific and show your love for Jesus Christ there is no debateing which god you follow. Just remember though that when you take a stand for Jesus Christ like this you will have many watching your every move. So read your bible, pray and trust in Jesus so you will stay grounded in your faith. You are young and mistakes will be made but let the Holy Spirit be your guide in all you do and you can't go wrong. Hang in there for Jesus...Your brother in Christ

Posted by: Anonymous

Nothing she does is or should be newsworthy. Especially this. Build them up just to knock them down. What a world.

Posted by: The Shoe

This is news? Seriously? Freedom of Speech. End of discussion. How is it possible that this child star is watched like a hawk for every possible hint of a story? Prediction: She gets caught with drugs or a 'girlfriend' before she's 22. Offended because the font is like a known brand? Get a life! At least Coca-Cola is real.

Posted by: Anonymous

SO WHAT! If she were donning some other headwear (and I think you know what I mean!) Hollywood would be praising her. This freaking planet needs to be reminded. It's about time someone brought Christ back into the pic. It just took a red blooded Southern American girl stickin to her roots to do it.

Posted by: Anonymous

I think it's great, she's showing what she believes in. People need to find something better to complain about, like our government.

Posted by: kris

Why is this news. The media wants us to care about such shallow things.

Posted by: Anonymous

Who gives a rat's a** what this marginally talented, spoiled and grossly self-centered little twit wears?

Posted by: Anonymous

"Showing what she believes in?" Please. She's trying to curry favor with the Christianist, flag waving, bomb-the-towel-heads-into-the stone age demographic that listens to country music. That is, when she isn't laying half-naked on her dad.

Posted by: Brandy

Obviously the media just likes picking on this poor girl! What really infuriates me is the fact that trashy, no class, crack head stars- not naming any names- can wear shirts that say "MILF in training" when they are preganant, and that is not commented on. But Heaven for bid someone spread a positive message! Yes, America let's continue to allow our children to lookup to the low class trailer park trash of the world, and never ever allow your children to develop morals! Becasue that might lead to a better world and God knows that would be horrible!

Posted by: Angela

Way to go Miley!! Show your love for Jesus! Jesus Christ Rocks!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous

I watch Miley, I let my daughter watch Miley. I'm glad that there is a young person out there who can be a role-model for girls now. I think if you look long and hard enough for something wrong, you'll eventually find it in everyone. Why don't these people who want to bash Miley look into their own lives and fix themselves. Let Miley and God work on Miley.

Posted by: JC

Come on you religious freaks!! It's a cap, she's not doing anything bad. If you were to see an average Joe wearing that cap it would be ok. Just let her be and mind your own business. Not even sure why this is news!!

Posted by: Anonymous

I watch Miley, I let my daughter watch Miley, I am a mindless idiot. I am glad this role model poses half-naked in suggestive poses with her father. I am glad Miley wears trashy clothes and participates in awards ceremonies applauding the worst, decadent Hollywood trash.

Yeah. LET God work on Miley, as the little tart needs it.

Posted by: Anonymous

she's fine let's leave her alone

Posted by: Tim

This is such a non-story! whats next??
As a Christian I don't see anything wrong with this, other than the fact Coke might not be to happy lol. We live in a free country with the freedom to express ourselves and frankly if that means gay marriage or Jesus' name on a hat who are we to Judge.
Matthew tells us “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you."
And yet the one problem I have with my own religion is that Christians spend TOO much time judging people!!! STOP IT and learn to play nicely

Posted by: Anonymous

Go for it Miley. Who are you to judge her. At least she has the guts to have our Savior's name on her hat and God our father is happy looking at her. Leave her alone! Stop judging and let Christians pray just like you let Muslims pray 5 times a day--no one says a thing to them. Stop being so judgemental of an innocent act from Miley

Posted by: Anominous

Jesus is my brother. I really doubt that He's upset she's wearing a JC hat. He's probably more upset that she appeared in an internet picture half-naked with man-juice splattered on her belly, and that she appeared in a 'lover's embrace' picture with her own dad. Since it's Jesus' name, it's His opinion that matters most in this non-issue.

Posted by: Art

This is a poor attempt by the media to create an uproar within the Christian Community. It is sad day for news when this is all that they have.

By the way, I bet that there is not even a real controversy.

Posted by: Sis. Regina

You know, believing in the Saviour, Jesus Christ, is black and white. You either believe or you don't, there's no middle (if you will). Some believe in hell, some don't. For me, just in case there is a hell, I am going to try and do the right thing, recognizing that I am not perfect, still trying to do the right thing. With that, Miley has made her choice of excepting Jesus Christ as her Saviour, now those that have not, do what you do. We all hear voices and make choices. God Bless Miley and all of those who thinks she's doing the wrong thing.

Posted by: Paul Stewart

What better place to proclaim the Lord than from her mountain top of fame.

Posted by: Karen

Miley thanks for taking a stand!!! Even if people don't think she should wear it at least people are seeing, maybe stop and think about Jesus Christ for a minute. He is Awesome!!!

Posted by: Aaron

Speaking of black and white, you guys do know that she has publicly announced her support for gay marriage, right?

Posted by: Anonymous

how is this all that different that those WWJD braclets that churches were practiaclly giving away???

Posted by: Debby

Jesus told us that if He would be lifted up, He would draw all people to Him. Keep lifting up Jesus, Miley- many will come to Him because of you! And that's why we are here- and when we have been a witness to bring our final person to Him, He will take us home to be with Him in heaven.

Posted by: Anonymous

Are you serious?? As Christians, we want to promote our religion and spread the word of Jesus to others. So, when a celebrity decides to do that exact thing by wearing a hat, we say it is 'not in good taste'? What is wrong with us? I think it is wonderful and that more people should be less ashamed of what they believe in. Way to go, Miley, for finally doing something positive!!

Posted by: Phyllis Rhodes

The rest of the Cocal Cola logo is often followed with the words, "Its the real thing." The Jesus Christ version has been around for years and usually includes the words, "He's the real thing". I don't know if Miley's hat includes that message, but whether it does or not, Hats, t-shirts and sweatshirts have always been used to broadcast the wearer's message. Sometimes that message is for a sports team, sometimes for a musical group and sometimes for a politician or person the wearer respects and looks up to. I believe this is what Miley Cyrus was doing by wearing the hat. Why this is controversial is beyond me. I will only say that because she spends much of her time around people and a business that has an unsatiable appetite for the innocence of young people, particularly young Christians, she needs to be steeped in prayer and Bible study and take regular council from mature Christians.

Posted by: Jaidien

I personally do not understand why this is an issue, we have hundreds of religions practiced in America, why is Christianity such a big issue, Props to you Miley
