LOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - Even though it's one of the most profitable franchises in movie history, Columbia has decided not to move forward with an expensive sequel, instead going with a cheaper pre-quel to the series, which will see a young Peter Parker in high school.
Variety reports that the studio, who was expected to pay Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi a pretty penny to return for the fourth film, pulled the plug when script problems threatened to delay the scheduled 2011 release.
The studio already had a contingency plan in place -- they also developed a teen Spiderman script that wouldl be far cheaper to produce.
Although Raimi's out, along with thirty-something Maguire, he's not holding it against the studio. "While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," he said.
Lol what a load of BS. Teen Spider man? The first movie Peter got his powers from the radioactive spider bite. If they are doing a prequel are we simply going to see a nerdy Peter Parker with no powers getting wedgies and stuffed in lockers for 90 minutes (no way this cheaper "alternative" script will last a whole 2 hours.
my 11 yr old son was so upset hee cried himself to sleep. he wondered why it wasnt going to be done and i told him a bunch of over zealous people could not work together. As if spiderman 4 would not make 7 or 8 hundred million. look at how much was spent on avatar and how much it made, you have to take a chance on new expensive technology if u want to make the big$. Spiderman started the ball on ALL OF THE SUPERHERO MOVIES , i think because of that it should have continued. But hey its only the broken hearts of all those kids excited waiting for the next one who hurt in the long run, who cares about them you money hungry studios. What about mickey roarke, this could have put him back on the a list to.
to the guy above...if your 11 year old kid cried himself to sleep over this, you really need to get him outside playing ball or riding a bike. Time to shut off the DVD player and Xbox. Man kids these days are pussies.
Superman started the ball actually, a long time ago sonny.
