Handler reportedly suffered from heart failure.

"Mr. Handler's memory will live on through the toys he helped to introduce to generations of children," the Toy Industry Association said in a statement.

The business tycoon was a co-founder of the toy company Mattel. His late wife, Ruth, created the Barbie doll in the 1950s. Handler is credited for naming the doll after their daughter, Barbara.

The Barbie doll was officially introduced to the world in 1959. The Ken doll joined Barbie a few years later, named after the couple's son.
