LOS ANGELES, California (X17onlineI) - Hilary Swank and Claude Van Damme are under fire for attending a birthday celebration for Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
Kadyrov is widely condemned for his human rights abuses, including alleged participation in the torture and killing of suspected Islamist insurgents in Chechnya.
"Ramzan Kadyrov is linked to a litany of horrific human rights abuses. It's inappropriate for stars to get paid to party with him. It bolsters his image and legitimizes a brutal leader and his regime. And getting paid to be part of such a lavish show in Chechnya trivializes the suffering of countless victims of human rights abuses there," the Human Rights Watch said in a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter.
Swank and Van Damme were reportedly paid six figures to attend the event.
