KurtRussellWestern200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) -- Kurt Russell is in talks to replace Kevin Costner in Quentin Tarantino's new Western, Django Unchained.

Costner bowed out last week due to scheduling conflicts -- he is currently filming the new Superman reboot.

Django is set in the American South in the 1800s and follows a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) as he partners with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to find his wife.

Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio also star -- both as villains. Russell's character is also villainous and mistreats slaves. Russell, 60, hasn't appeared on the big screen since 2007.

The film begins production in November.
