James Murdoch Reliquishes His Position As Executive Chairman Of News International
Posted on Wed Feb 29, 2012 09:48 AM PDT

james-murdoch-200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - James Murdoch has relinquished his position as Executive Chairman of News International, News Corporation announced today. Murdoch, now Deputy Chief Operating Officer, will relocate to the company headquarters in New York, and Tom Mockridge will continue in his current post as CEO.

The UK publishing operation became embroiled in a huge scandal under Murdoch's watch. News International employees were accused of unethical news gathering practices, such as police bribery and phone tapping of celebrities, politicians, and members of the British Royal Family. As the scandal unfolded, advertiser boycotts contributed to the closure of News of the World, and an ongoing investigation continues to provoke arrests in Great Britain. Mockridge will now report to COO Chase Carey - not Murdoch.

Upon his move, Murdoch will focus his energies on News Corp's pay TV operations.

"We are all grateful for James' leadership at News International and across Europe and Asia, where he has made lasting contributions to the group's strategy in paid digital content and its efforts to improve and enhance governance programs. Now that he has moved to New York, James will continue to assume a variety of essential corporate leadership mandates, with particular focus on important pay-TV businesses and broader international operations," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch said in a statement.
