LOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - The film The Artist received a box office boost following its Best Picture win at this year's Oscars, bringing in $3.9 million this weekend for a domestic cumulative total of $37.1 million. This weekend was up 34% from the previous weekend.
The black-and-white silent film expanded from 966 theaters to 1,756, which moved it into the top 10 chart for the first time since it originally opened. The Weinstein Co. planned on holding back on a wide release until after the Academy Awards, as the film isn't a traditional box office smash.
"This is within the range of what we expected. The film is a slow burn," Weinstein Co. president of distribution Erik Lomis said. The production company believes The Artist can gross up to $50 million in North America. The film has also seen a bump in viewership overseas as well, with it grossing $1.8 million in France this past weekend.
Best Actor winner Jean Dujardin's new film Les Infideles debuted to strong numbers this weekend, grossing $7.2 million.
