LOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - After nine studio albums and over 20 mix tapes, Lil' Wayne has decided to put his music career on hold to pursue a skateboarding career.
The 29-year-old rapper said in an interview with Atlanta radio station, Hot 107.9, "I picked up the skateboard and I thought it'd be a hobby and what happened is it's a lifestyle." He goes on to say, "You have to be fully committed because its super scary. In order to be fully committed you have to live that lifestyle. Like the young kids say, ‘You have to be about that life.’ It's kind of putting rap on the back burner. I think I deserve that. I think fans deserve a little-to-no Wayne. I've been everywhere. I've been out on everybody's song. I’m still on everybody’s song. My artists have been doing awesome. I believe the fans deserve some peace from me. So I'll be on my skateboard in the meantime."
Lil' Wayne's skateboarding skills were seen in a new Mountain Dew commercial campaign titled, "This is How We DEW."
He tells Vibe Magazine, “I spend more time on the skateboard, 'cause even at the studio I have ramps and sh*t.” “In the booth literally I have something I can boardslide on and a quarter pipe. So I get off the mic, drop the board down and skate."
Lil' Wayne's passion for skateboarding is evident, as he has a ramp built on the roof of his home in Miami. On August 29th, he'll celebrate the opening of his own skate park in New Orleans called "DEWeezy Skatepark." It was also confirmed in April that he's planning a line of skater shoes.
His rap hiatus isn't a surprise, as he's been very vocal about his passion for skateboarding and even announced in October that he plans to retire from music by 35.
Lil' Wayne is one of the most popular musicians of the decade. He has received four Grammy awards and several BET music awards. He's even had several No.1 singles and has collaborated with the hottest artists. His music label, Young Money Entertainment, has successful artists such as Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Tyga.
His latest album titled The Dedication 4 is to be released on August 15th.
